What to watch for in WPIAL sports on April 12, 2025: Softball elites square off

They have been the powers of WPIAL Class 4A softball for a decade, winning a combined six district championships in the last 10 seasons.
On Saturday, the rivalry continues as Elizabeth Forward visits Belle Vernon at 1 p.m.
The softball powers are near the top in Section 2-4A again this season.
The Warriors are 2-0 in the section and 4-1 overall having won three straight games; however, EF has only played one game in April since coming back from a trip to Orlando, Fla.
The Leopards sit at 2-1 in the section and 4-5 for the season but have won two straight.
Since 2015, Belle Vernon has captured four district titles, winning 3A gold in 2015 and 4A titles in 2017, 2018 and 2023.
In that same time, Elizabeth Forward won WPIAL championships in 2019 and 2024.
Twice the two have battled each other in the WPIAL championship game.
In the 2007 Class 3A finals, Belle Vernon edged Elizabeth Forward, 3-1.
Eleven years later, the two met again in the 2018 Class 4A championship game as the Leopards again defeated the Warriors, 5-4.
Two years ago, EF was the No. 1 seed in the 4A playoffs but lost big to BVA in the semifinals, 10-1.
The Leopards went on to beat Montour in the district finals.
Perfect softball makeups
Two WPIAL softball teams with undefeated records will be in action in section makeup games Saturday afternoon.
In Class 6A, Seneca Valley travels to Pine-Richland at 2 p.m.
The Raiders are tied for first place with a 5-0 record and are undefeated for the season at 7-0.
The Rams are in fourth place at 3-3 in the section and have a 4-3 record overall.
In Section 3-2A, Chartiers-Houston hosts Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at noon.
The Buccaneers sit atop the section at 2-0 and are 8-0 overall.
The Chargers are right behind them in the section with a 1-0 mark and a 3-3 overall record.
In Section 4-5A, Bethel Park visits Baldwin at 2 p.m.
The Black Hawks had been undefeated this season before losing to Trinity on Friday, dropping them to 2-1 in the section and 6-1 overall.
The Highlanders sit alone in first place after defeating Albert Gallatin on Friday to improve to 3-0 in the section and 7-1 overall.
A perfect baseball makeup
Indiana and Derry are tied for first place in WPIAL Section 3-4A baseball and were set to square off Monday and Tuesday.
Several postponements later and the first of the two-game section series is set to be played at Armstrong at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Both the Little Indians and Trojans are 2-0 in the section.
Indiana remains undefeated on the season with an 8-0 record while Derry enters the contest with an overall mark of 3-2.
The second game of the series will be played Thursday at White Township Park in Indiana.
