First place in Section 1-3A WPIAL softball will be up for grabs Friday when Mt. Pleasant hosts Southmoreland at 4 p.m.

The host Vikings are 6-2 in the section and 8-5 overall.

Mt. Pleasant had won six straight games before back-to-back losses this week to Burrell and Deer Lakes.

The Scotties are 5-2 in section play and 7-4 for the season.

Southmoreland has won two straight and four of their last five games.

The first meeting of the year between these teams was a memorable one April 11.

Southmoreland led what had been a back-and-forth game after five innings, 7-5.

The Vikings scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to go back in front 9-7 before the Scotties answered with four runs in their half of the sixth to go back ahead, 11-9.

Mt. Pleasant scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, then shut Southmoreland down in the bottom of the inning to hold on for a wild win, 12-11.

In Section 1-6A baseball, Butler visits Central Catholic at the No Offseason facility in Russelton at 3:45 p.m. with a chance to sweep this week’s three-game series and remain near the top of the standings.

The Golden Tornado won the first two games against the Vikings on Tuesday and Wednesday by scores of 11-5 and 4-1.

A win keeps Butler in second place behind North Allegheny in the section.

Entering the game, the Golden Tornado are 5-3 in section play and 9-4 overall.

This is the final section game for Central Catholic, which sits at 2-9 in the section and 5-9 overall.

With the loss on Wednesday, the Vikings have been eliminated from the playoff chase.

5A Friday fray

The chase for the Section 3-5A softball section crown is a good one with three teams entering Friday’s action separated by only one game.

Currently, Chartiers Valley is 6-1, West Allegheny is 5-1 and South Fayette is 5-2.

On Friday, while Chartiers Valley is home to last-place Montour, the other two teams battle for the second time this week. West Allegheny visits South Fayette at 3:45 p.m.

The Indians are 9-4 overall and have won three straight and six of their last seven.

The Lions are 10-4 this season and have won two in a row and 10 of their last 12 games.

On Monday, host West Allegheny defeated South Fayette, 9-4.

Savanna Benish had a double, triple and three RBIs for the Indians while teammates Ava Benish and Irena Santoro each had a double for West A.

The Lions were led by Brenna Dunn, who went 4 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBIs.
