Welcome to opening night of the WPIAL boys soccer section schedule in two of the four classifications: 3A and 2A.

Just days into the new season, section play begins in all four sections in the two district middle classes.

A year ago, the South Park boys soccer team won 20 of its 23 matches, losing twice and playing to a tie as the Eagles captured a second straight WPIAL 2A championship.

The Eagles also won the Section 3-2A regular season title with a record of 13-0-1.

On Tuesday, South Park begins its title defense with a home match against Ligonier Valley.

The Rams missed the playoffs by only a half-game last fall with an overall record of 10-8.

It is the season opener for both teams.

Rough start

Another WPIAL boys soccer champion from a year ago that is set open up section play Tuesday is Moon.

The 2024 district 3A winner actually began its title defense last weekend in the Pine-Richland tournament.

It was a rough start for the Tigers, who lost both matches to Archbishop Ryan and Seneca Valley by a combined score of 9-0.

The two losses suffered by Moon represent one more loss than it suffered all of last fall on the pitch.

The Tigers won their section crown and a WPIAL championship before suffering their only loss of the year to Radnor in the PIAA 3A finals, 1-0.

Moon will battle a Baldwin team that missed the playoffs last year after finishing in sixth place in the seven-team Section 4-3A.

The Tigers outscored the Highlanders in their two meetings last season, 17-0.

Fighting for first

Nearing the midway point of section play in WPIAL boys and girls team golf, there are two showdowns set for Tuesday that will break a tie for the top spot in the section.

In the girls golf battle for first place in Section 1-3, Pine-Richland will host North Allegheny at Conley’s Golf Course in Butler at 3:45 p.m.

The Rams are 4-0 in section play this season while the Tigers have won all five of their section matches.

In boys golf, first-place in Section 9-2A is up for grabs as Quaker Valley visits North Catholic at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Gibsonia at 2:30 p.m.

The Quakers are 3-0 in section matches while the Trojans also are unbeaten at 4-0 in section play.
