Call it the pre-league Tour de WPIAL.

Before they get starting on defending their City League championship in two weeks, the Allderdice boys basketball team has loaded up its nonleague schedule against top-notch competition from the WPIAL.

Coach Devin Crummie’s Dragons started the season Saturday with a 47-39 victory over Montour.

They will face Central Catholic, Chartiers Valley and Pine-Richland down the road before finally opening District 8 action at Perry on Dec. 19.

On Tuesday, Allderdice faces a stiff challenge in visiting Woodland Hills (2-0) at 7 p.m.

The Wolverines are off to a perfect start with convincing home wins Saturday and Sunday.

Woody High opened the season against the City League’s Carrick and won, 74-41. Then, 24 hours later, the Wolverines crushed Steel Valley, 68-17.

The last time these teams played was on the second-to-last day of 2021 when the host Dragons edged the Wolverines in overtime, 59-57.

Section opener (take two)

The first of many, many WPIAL basketball section games originally slated for Tuesday now tips off Wednesday with a girls Class 5A section opener.

Originally scheduled for Dec. 22, the Section 4-5A lid-lifter between host Thomas Jefferson and Uniontown was moved again to Wednesday because of the Tuesday snow storm.

The game marks the season opener for a Uniontown team that finished tied for sixth place in the seven-team section with Albert Gallatin.

The Red Raiders finished the campaign with only one section victory and an overall record of 5-16.

Meanwhile, Thomas Jefferson is already off to a 2-0 start this season with dominating victories over Quaker Valley and Knoch in the Montour tipoff tournament this past weekend.

The Jaguars finished in second place behind WPIAL champion Peters Township in the section and 22-6 overall.

TJ lost to Peters Township in both the WPIAL semifinals and PIAA second round.

While the Jaguars are without Robert Morris commit Kaylee D’Angelo, who tore her ACL, they do return leading scorer and Campbell commit Maggie Spell.

In the two games last season between the Jaguars and Red Raiders, Thomas Jefferson won both section contests and outscored Uniontown in the two wins, 138-37.

The game tips off at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a boys nonsection battle of 5A playoff teams from last year when Uniontown (0-0) faces Thomas Jefferson (2-0).

Playoff rematch I

Two teams that met in the 2025 WPIAL girls basketball playoffs will collide again Wednesday in an early season nonsection contest.

Chartiers-Houston (1-0) visits Brentwood (0-0) at 7:30 p.m.

In the first round of the 2025 WPIAL Class 2A girls hoops postseason, the Buccaneers eliminated the visiting Spartans, 51-28,

Chartiers-Houston then lost in the quarterfinals to Winchester Thurston, but did qualify for the state playoffs.

The Bucs won their opener this season over Charleroi, 58-35.

This is the season opener for Brentwood.

Mat openers

A week before some WPIAL teams hit the mats for the start of section duals, there are 21 district nonsection matches slated for Wednesday.
