What to watch for in WPIAL sports on Jan. 10, 2026: Basketball showcases set for Saturday

Seven boys basketball games will make up the annual Legends Classic in Ambridge on Saturday presented by the Pittsburgh Basketball Club.

Here are the four games to be played at the Ambridge Field House.

• Sto-Rox at Ambridge at 11:30 a.m.

• Brashear vs. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at 1 p.m.

• Seton LaSalle vs. Quaker Valley at 2:30 p.m.

• Thomas Jefferson vs. Ellwood City at 4 p.m.

There are three games slated for the Ambridge main gym.

• Shady Side Academy vs. Northgate at 11:30 a.m.

• Springdale vs. Hopewell at 1 p.m.

• West Mifflin vs. Bishop Canevin at 2:30 p.m.

Challenging ‘Dice

Another one-day basketball event set for Saturday will take place inside the Pittsburgh city limits.

One girls and three boys hoops games will make up The Challenge at Allderdice.

• Boys: Neighborhood Academy vs. Penn Hills at 1:30 p.m.

• Boys: Imani Christian vs. Obama Academy at 3 p.m.

• Boys: Moon at Allderdice at 4:30 p.m.

• Girls: Oakland Catholic at Allderdice at 6 p.m.

Rally in the Mon Valley

Six district girls basketball teams will take part in the three-game MVI Tournament at Belle Vernon.

• Bishop Canevin vs. West Mifflin at 12 p.m.

• Frazier vs. Ringgold at 2 p.m.

• Serra Catholic at Belle Vernon at 4 p.m.

Mat tournaments

There are three big wrestling tournaments involving WPIAL teams this weekend that begin Friday and conclude Saturday.

The first is the Westmoreland County Coaches Association tournament at Greensburg Salem. Participating schools include Belle Vernon, Burrell, Derry, Franklin Regional, Greensburg Salem, Hempfield, Kiski Area, Latrobe, Ligonier Valley, Mt. Pleasant. Norwin, Penn-Trafford, Southmoreland and Yough.

There will be 24 district teams participating in the two-day Burgettstown Invitational, including Armstrong, Avonworth, Beaver, Bentworth, Burgettstown, Carlynton, Central Valley, Chartiers Valley, Chartiers-Houston, Fort Cherry, Hopewell, Jefferson-Morgan, Keystone Oaks, Laurel, Mars, Mt. Lebanon, North Hills, Pine-Richland, South Park, South Side, Upper St. Clair, Washington and West Greene.

Saturday wraps up the annual Mid-Winter Mayhem events at the Kovalchick Convention Complex at IUP with 10 teams from District 7 including Butler, Central Catholic, Elizabeth Forward, Highlands, Neighborhood Academy, North Allegheny, Penn-Trafford, Peters Township, Thomas Jefferson and West Allegheny.

Spirited competition

The 14th annual PIAA competitive spirit championships conclude Saturday in Johnstown.

A total of 120 teams from the 12 districts in the PIAA are taking part in the state championships at the 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial.

Five championships will be awarded in the 3A large division, 3A small division, 2A large division and 2A small division as well as the co-ed division.
