Welcome to quarterfinals Saturday in the PIAA lacrosse and volleyball playoffs.

Since the 2021 PIAA lacrosse postseason, WPIAL teams have averaged three first-round victories a year in both the boys and girls state playoffs.

The girls District 7 teams kept that trend going with three opening-round wins Tuesday in the PIAA lacrosse playoffs while the boys upped the ante with four teams from the WPIAL advancing to the quarterfinals Saturday.

In the boys 3A and 2A tournaments, the 2024 WPIAL finalists are both alive and in action in the second round.

• Class 3A champion Mt. Lebanon (18-4) will battle District 1 winner Garnet Valley (19-3) at Panzer Stadium at Penn State at 4:30 p.m.

• Meanwhile, WPIAL runner-up North Allegheny (15-8) will face the No. 3 team out of District 1, Radnor (18-5), at Memorial Park Stadium in Mechanicsburg at 2 p.m. You can listen to the match on Trib HSSN.

• Class 2A District 7 champion Mars (18-3) will try to continue its strong state success story of three straight years in the finals when it takes on District 12 winner Devon Prep (17-5) at Panzer Stadium at Penn State at noon.

• WPIAL runner-up South Fayette (20-2) goes up against District 3 champion Camp Hill Trinity (21-0) at Memorial Park Stadium in Mechanicsburg at noon.

In girls lacrosse, one Class 3A team and two 2A schools will take part in Round 2.

• Class 3A WPIAL champion Mt. Lebanon (20-0) hopes to remain undefeated when it plays District 1 runner-up Conestoga (18-4) at Panzer Stadium at Penn State at 2:30 p.m.

• It will be breakfast in Happy Valley for the WPIAL 2A champs as Mars (15-6) goes up against District 1 runner-up Villa Maria Academy (17-6) at Panzer Stadium at Penn State at 10 a.m.

• WPIAL runner-up Chartiers Valley (17-3) will challenge District 3 winner Twin Valley (17-5) at Memorial Park Stadium in Mechanicsburg at 4 p.m.

Serve survivors

It was a rough start for WPIAL and City League teams in the opening round of the PIAA boys volleyball playoffs this past Tuesday.

Seven area teams qualified for the state playoffs and in the first round, they were a combined 2-5.

The two survivors are the two recently crowned WPIAL champions.

In Class 3A, Shaler (17-1) goes up against District 6 champion State College (10-4) at St. Francis University in Loretto at noon.

In Class 2A, Mars (21-0) looks to continue its perfect season when it battles District 6 champion West Shamokin (16-1) at Gateway at noon.
