May Day, May Day!
That might be the distress signal sent out by WPIAL baseball and softball teams trying to finish section games on a day with a rainy forecast.
In district baseball, the finales of a pair of three-game series in Section 1-6A are set for Thursday.
Section champion North Allegheny is set to host rival North Hills in the rubber game of their series at 7 p.m.
The Tigers are 9-2 in the section and 11-6 for the season.
The Indians have clinched a playoff berth and are in fourth place at 4-7 in the section and 7-11 overall.
The second- and third-place teams clash as Seneca Valley goes for a sweep when it visits rival Butler.
The Raiders will finish in second place at 7-4 in the section and 10-6 this spring.
The Golden Tornado could end up tied for second, but they lose the tiebreaker as they sit at 6-5 in the section and 10-6 overall.
One other game of note: Elizabeth Forward and West Mifflin will resume their game in Section 2-4A on Thursday at West Mifflin.
The Warriors were leading the Titans when the game was suspended in the top of the ffith inning Tuesday.
Fighting for first
The top four teams in Section 4-3A boys volleyball are separated by only one game.
That logjam will be broken up a bit after Thursday as they all go head to head.
The tie for first place will be broken when Central Catholic (5-2) visits Gateway (4-2).
The winner will be alone in first place while the loser will fall into a tie for second place with the winner of North Hills (4-3) hosting Fox Chapel (4-3).
Elsewhere in Class 3A boys volleyball, there is a tie for first in Sections 1 and 3 coming down to the final week.
In Section 1, Mt. Lebanon is 7-1 and Canon-McMillan is 6-1.
On Wednesday, the Big Macs host Baldwin.
In Section 3, Seneca Valley and North Allegheny are both 5-1.
The Raiders host Moon while the Tigers visit Pine-Richland.
Boys lacrosse showdown
In Section 2-2A, Mars is alone in first place, one game ahead of both Sewickley Academy and Hampton.
The Fightin’ Planets have already defeated the Talbots; now the only thing in their way from clinching another section championship is the Panthers.
The two are slated to meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mars.
Mars is 8-0 in the section and 13-2 overall.
Sewickley Academy is 7-1 in the section and 9-1 overall.
The Panthers’ lone loss of the season was to Hampton in mid-April.
