Welcome to Bracketology Friday.
The WPIAL softball and lacrosse committees released their playoff matchups Thursday; now baseball and boys volleyball take to the bracket release spotlight Friday.
In baseball, 80 district teams are set to vie for six championships.
While North Allegheny in 6A, Penn-Trafford in 5A and Avonworth in 3A are seeking repeats of the titles they won in 2024, Seton LaSalle and Bishop Canevin are going for the rare three-peat.
For Bishop Canevin, no WPIAL team has ever won three straight Class A baseball championships.
Seton LaSalle won its two titles in 2023-2024 in Class 2A, but the Rebels are now competing in 3A this postseason. No team has ever won three straight baseball championships in two different classifications.
Penn-Trafford is also trying to make history and become the first Class 5A team to win back-to-back WPIAL crowns.
Boys volleyball bracketology
Baseball isn’t the only spring sport where the playoff brackets will be released by the WPIAL on Friday.
The district boys volleyball postseason tournaments will also be released.
Because of the increase in the number of district teams this spring, one of the biggest playoff fields in the sport’s history will begin play next week.
There are 14 teams from Class 3A that qualified while 12 are in from the four sections in Class 2A.
The top two seeds in the 3A playoffs will receive first round byes and the top four seeds in the 2A tournament will get byes into the quarterfinals.
Shaler won back-to-back 3A titles, but the Titans are now in the 2A playoff field along with defending champion Mars.
