Happy Veterans Day as we offer a big-time salute to all the men and women who have or are currently serving in our country’s armed forces.
This holiday is also Semifinals Tuesday in the PIAA boys and girls soccer playoffs as well as the girls volleyball state postseason.
Fifteen teams from the WPIAL have proven to be a different kind of force, one on scholastic pitches and courts throughout Western Pa.
Now they are two victories from raising state gold.
Boys soccer
For 13 consecutive years, there has been a WPIAL team playing in the PIAA Class A boys soccer championship match.
Make it 14 years in a row.
District 7 will once again have a team in the Class A title match since two WPIAL teams will collide in the PIAA semifinals Tuesday when Bentworth (23-0) battles Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (19-1) at Peters Township at 7 p.m. in a rematch of the WPIAL finals.
In that district championship contest, the Bearcats captured a third straight district crown with a 3-1 win over the Chargers.
Thus far in the state playoffs, Bentworth knocked off Merychurst Prep in the first round, 3-1, and then shut out Winchester Thurston in the quarterfinals, 5-0.
OLSH advanced with victories over Bishop Carroll in the opening round, 8-0, and defending state champion Lancaster Mennonite in the second round, 2-1.
The Bearcats are trying to reach the state finals for the second straight season after falling to Lancaster Mennonite in overtime, 1-0.
The last time a boys Class A state championship match was held without a team from the WPIAL was in 2011 when New Hope-Solebury knocked off Mercyhurst Prep.
In the other Class A semifinal, District 1 champion Delco Christian School (20-3) takes on District 2 winner Wyoming Seminary (17-5) at Hamburg at 5 p.m.
Here are the semifinals in the other three boys soccer classifications:
• In Class 4A, WPIAL runner-up Seneca Valley (19-3) goes up against District 1 runner-up Abington (20-2-3) at Chambersburg at 4 p.m., and District 11 winner Parkland (23-1-1) takes on the third-seed from District 1, West Chester Henderson (21-3-1) at Hatboro-Horsham at 6 p.m.
The Raiders won three straight PIAA semifinals from 2020-2022, going on to win state 4A boys gold in 2020 and 2022.
• In Class 3A, City League champion Allderdice (17-5) hopes to make history when it goes up against District 3 champion Conrad Weiser (23-0-1) at Mansion Park in Altoona at 6 p.m., while District 1 winner Harriton (21-1-1) squares off against District 2 champ Abington Heights (22-1) at Hamburg at 7 p.m.
The Dragons are trying to become the first City League soccer team to reach the PIAA finals.
• In Class 2A, four district champions square off in the semifinals when Deer Lakes (20-3-1) from the WPIAL battles Fairview (22-0) from District 10 at Franklin at 7 p.m., and D-1 winner Faith Christian (20-1-1) takes on D-4 champ Lewisburg (22-1) at North Schuylkill at 7 p.m.
The Lancers advanced to the PIAA championship with state semifinal wins in 2018 and 2020.
Girls soccer
For as much success as various North Allegheny sports teams have had in the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs, the NA girls soccer program has only reached the state championship game once.
Five years ago, the Tigers knocked off Cumberland Valley in the PIAA Class 4A semifinals, 1-0, to reach the girls soccer state championship match for the first time in school history.
NA fell in the 2020 finals to Pennridge, 1-0.
Now North Allegheny (19-3-2) is one win from returning to the final when it plays the No. 5 seed out of District 1, Central Bucks East (20-4), at Chambersburg at 6 p.m.
The Tigers were the No. 5 seed in the WPIAL playoffs before beating Armstrong, Pine-Richland, top seed Peters Township and Seneca Valley in double overtime in the district finals.
Their hot play has continued in the PIAA postseason with a shutout of Penn Manor and an overtime victory over Downingtown West.
Central Bucks East has knocked off Manheim Township and Seneca Valley in the state playoffs by a combined score of 6-1.
In the other 4A girls semifinal, the No. 3 seed out of District 3, Central Dauphin (14-8), faces the No. 4 seed from District 1, Central Bucks South (17-6-1), at Cocalico at 7 p.m.
Here are the semifinals in the other three girls soccer classifications:
• In Class 3A, WPIAL runner-up South Fayette (20-2-1) tries to reach that elusive state championship match when it takes on District 9 champion DuBois (19-2-1) at Franklin at 5 p.m., while District 1 champ Radnor (19-4) faces District 3 runner-up Lower Dauphin (18-4) at Cocalico at 5 p.m.
After falling to Fox Chapel in the District 7 finals, the Lions have eliminated two district champions thus far, shutting out D-6 winner Hollidaysburg in the first round and D-3 champ Cocalico in overtime in the quarterfinals.
• In Class 2A, the A-K Valley will be in the spotlight when two rivals collide at Fox Chapel as WPIAL champion Freeport (20-1) battles WPIAL runner-up Burrell (14-7-2) at 6 p.m., while District 12 champion Archbishop Wood (16-6-1) squares off against District 11 winner Northwestern Lehigh (26-0) at Upper Perkiomen at 6 p.m.
Elena Jenkins scored the only goal of the WPIAL Class 2A finals as the Yellowjackets edged the Buccaneers, 1-0. In the regular season, Freeport swept Burrell, 3-1 and 1-0.
• In Class A, WPIAL consolation winner Springdale (15-2-1) goes up against District 6 champion Bishop Guilfoyle Academy (20-1) at Price Field in Johnstown at 6 p.m., and District 1 winner Faith Christian (16-4-1) takes on District 4 champ Muncy (20-2-1) at North Schuylkill at 5 p.m.
The Dynamos are trying to win the state semifinals for a second straight year. They lost to Dock Mennonite in the PIAA title match last year, 4-3.
Girls volleyball
Thanks in large part to North Allegheny, a WPIAL team has participated in at least one PIAA girls volleyball championship match each year since 2013.
The odds for that streak continuing in 2025 are 100% after two district teams advanced to the Class 3A semifinals to square off in a rematch of the WPIAL title game.
On Tuesday, Beaver (23-1) battles Oakland Catholic (22-2) at North Allegheny at 6 p.m.
The Bobcats eliminated Mars in the state quarterfinals, 3-1, while the Eagles soared past District 3 champion Greencastle-Antrim in three games.
When the two teams met in the district title match 10 days ago, Beaver swept Oakland Catholic in three games by scores of 25-15, 27-25 and again 27-25.
During the regular season, the Eagles handed the Bobcats their only loss in a nonsection match, 3-0.
The winner of the Beaver vs. Oakland Catholic match advances to the finals at Cumberland Valley in Mechanicsburg on Saturday against the winner of the other Class 3A semifinal between District 2 winner Berwick (20-1) and District 1 champion Pope John Paul II (20-2) at Martz Hall in Pottsville at 6 p.m.
Here are the semifinals in the other three girls volleyball classifications:
• In Class 4A, WPIAL runner-up Pine-Richland (16-6) meets District 1 runner-up Unionville (21-1) at Bald Eagle at 5 p.m., while District 1 champion Spring-Ford (26-0) clashes with the No. 4 seed out of District 1, Bishop Shanahan (19-5), at Garnet Valley at 6 p.m.
The Rams are trying to make it nine straight years a WPIAL team has played in the PIAA 4A finals.
• In Class 2A, amazing Avonworth (18-6) hopes to continue its incredible postseason run as the WPIAL champs face District 10 champ Corry (20-0) at Grove City at 6 p.m. and District 12 winner Lansdale Catholic (17-6) goes up against District 3 champ Delone Catholic (20-4) at Cocalico at 5 p.m.
After winning district gold as the No. 11 seed in the WPIAL playoffs, the Antelopes have swept past Erie Cathedral prep and District 5 winner Everett in the first two rounds of the state playoffs.
• In Class A, WPIAL champion Eden Christian Academy (18-4) will challenge District 10 winner Maplewood (21-2) at Grove City at 7:30 p.m. while District 11 champ Tri-Valley (23-1) battles the top team out of District 3, Linville Hill (22-0), at Cocalico at 7 p.m.
The Warriors have been pushed in the state playoffs but have advanced through two rounds with a win over Clarion in the opening round, 3-1, and a five game thriller over Berlin-Brothersvalley in the quarters, 3-2.
