WPIAL fall sports bracketology begins with postseason pitch talk Wednesday.

The district will unveil the brackets for the WPIAL boys and girls soccer playoffs, and we will break them down on the WPIAL Playoff Pairings Show on TribHSSN.TribLive.com at 1 p.m.

The number 61 is prominent in this district soccer postseason as both the boys and girls playoff field has 61 district teams set to play for gold.

It will be the standard 16-team bracket for most of the eight postseason tournaments, with the exceptions being four first-round byes in a 12-team field in boys and girls Class 4A and one preliminary round game in boys 3A and girls A.

All eight defending district champions from a year ago are back in the postseason; in fact, all eight were section champions this season.

Trying to win WPIAL back-to-back gold are Fox Chapel in 4A boys, Peters Township in 4A girls, Moon in 3A boys, Quaker Valley in 2A girls and Springdale in A girls.

Three teams are trying to three-peat this fall: South Fayette in 3A girls, South Park in 2A boys and Bentworth in A boys.

The WPIAL Girls Volleyball Playoff Pairings Show will be 1 p.m. Friday on TribHSSN.TribLive.com.

Golden serves

There is gold at stake Wednesday with the WPIAL Class 3A and 2A girls team tennis championships at the Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center at Washington & Jefferson College.

The top two seeds reached the finals in Class 3A as top seed Shady Side Academy faces No. 2 Bethel Park.

Both the Bulldogs and Black Hawks swept through the first two rounds.

In the semifinals Monday, Shady Side Academy ousted defending champion Mt. Lebanon, 4-1, while Bethel Park edged North Allegheny, 3-2.

The last time SSA won a girls team tennis title was 15 years ago when it defeated Mt. Lebanon in the 2010 finals, 3-2.

Bethel Park took the district crown two years ago when it swept past North Allegheny in the 2023 finals, 5-0.

The Black Hawks have reached the team finals for a third straight year. They lost to rival Mt. Lebanon last fall, 3-2.

The championship match begins at 2 p.m.

No. 3 North Allegheny will take on No. 4 Mt. Lebanon in the 3A consolation match at Shady Side Academy at 3 p.m.

The 2A championship match also features the top two seeds as No. 1 Quaker Valley will face No. 2 North Catholic starting at noon.

Both the Quakers and Trojans advanced to the finals with close 3-2 victories in the final four.

QV eliminated Oakland Catholic in the semifinals while NC edged Winchester Thurston.

North Catholic looks to repeat as 2A champions while Quaker Valley hopes to won its first district girls team tennis crown since 2012.

In the consolation match, Oakland Catholic will battle Winchester Thurston at Sewickley Academy at 3 p.m.
