What to watch for in WPIAL sports on Oct. 30, 2025: Gold up for grabs during championship weekend

We still have two days left in October, yet Christmas commercials and music are already popping up on us.

One popular holiday lyric that fits these next few days for fall high school sports fans is, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”.

There is gold in them there hills and plenty of it with district and state championships galore as October becomes November.

Besides the start of the WPIAL football playoffs Friday, here is a rundown of district and state championship and WPIAL consolation matches Thursday through Saturday.

Thursday

It is Day 2 of the WPIAL soccer championships at Highmark Stadium in Station Square with two title matches.

• A new district champion will be crowned in Class A girls soccer when top-seeded Sewickley Academy (18-1) battles No. 2 Bentworth (18-1-1) at 6 p.m. The Panthers are trying to win their fifth girls soccer title and first in 21 years, while the Bearcats are hoping to secure their first girls soccer title.

• History could be made in the WPIAL Class A boys soccer final in a battle of unbeaten teams when top-seeded Bentworth (20-0) locks horns with No. 2 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (17-0) at 8 p.m. The Bearcats are trying to become the first boys soccer team to win three district championships in a row since Quaker Valley from 1991-1993. The Chargers are searching for their first WPIAL boys soccer crown.

• There are two WPIAL girls soccer consolation matches Thursday with a berth in the PIAA playoffs at stake. In Class 2A, Mt. Pleasant (15-4-1) visits Quaker Valley (15-2-1) at 6 p.m. in a battle of section champions. Then in Class A, Springdale (12-2-1) hosts Waynesburg (11-4-2) at 7:30 p.m.

• In the 3A boys soccer consolation match, section rivals meet for the third time as Thomas Jefferson (17-3-1) visits Bethel Park (14-3-3) at 6 p.m. The Black Hawks won the second meeting against the Jaguars in late September, 2-1. In late August, the two teams played to a tie, 1-1.

Friday

Besides 25 first-round and quarterfinals football games, its Day 3 of the WPIAL soccer championships at Highmark Stadium in Station Square with two more finals.

• Fresh off an upset of top-seeded Peters Township in the semifinals, No. 5 North Allegheny (16-3-2) will take on section rival and No. 2 Seneca Valley (12-3-2) at 6 p.m. in the 4A girls soccer finals. The teams split in the regular season with the Raiders winning at home in September, 2-0, and the Tigers evening the score with a home win in early October, 2-1.

• No. 2 Fox Chapel (15-2) looks to become the second team this decade to win back-to-back 4A boys soccer championships when they face No. 4 Seneca Valley (17-2) for the third time this season at 8 p.m. The other team to win consecutive titles in boys 4A was Seneca Valley in 2020-2021. The Raiders’ only losses this season were both to the Foxes, 2-1 in overtime in early September and 3-2 one month ago.

• The PIAA girls tennis singles and doubles championships begin with first-round and quarterfinals matches in both Class 3A and 2A. The event takes place at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Saturday

The final day of the WPIAL soccer championships at Highmark Stadium in Station Square takes place with a couple of early contests.

• A couple of A-K Valley rivals from Section 2-2A collide in the a.m. when No. 8 Burrell challenges No. 2 Freeport (17-1) with both teams trying to win their first girls soccer crown at 10 a.m. In the regular season, the Yellowjackets swept both section matches against the Buccaneers, 3-1 and 1-0.

• The final district soccer championship of 2025 is the boys 3A finals at high noon when No. 8 West Allegheny (12-6) faces No. 3 Franklin Regional (17-3). The Indians are trying to win their second district title and first since 2013. The Panthers are vying for their third WPIAL boys soccer crown and first since they won back-to-back gold in 2018-2019.

• The WPIAL girls volleyball championships are set for Saturday at Peters Township. The 4A title match pits No. 5 Pine-Richland (14-5) against No. 2 Peters Township (15-3) at 5 p.m. Both the Rams and Indians defeated the 2024 finalists in the semifinals with Pine-Richland sweeping past North Allegheny and Peters Township eliminating North Catholic.

• Top-seeded Oakland Catholic (20-1) battles No. 2 Beaver (19-1) in the 3A title match at 3 p.m. The two met in a nonsection match Sept. 25 with the Eagles beating the Bobcats, 3-0. The only loss for Oakland Catholic this season was to 2023-2024 district champion South Fayette.

• Cinderella Avonworth (15-6) tries to pick up its fourth straight upset in this postseason when it takes on top-seeded Hopewell (18-1) in the Class 2A finals at 1 p.m.. The Antelopes beat No. 6 Riverside, No. 3 Seton LaSalle and No. 2 Waynesburg to reach the title match. The ‘Lopes and Vikings split their two regular season contests with a 3-1 loss on Sept. 9 being the only loss of the season for Hopewell.

• In the Class A championship match, Eden Christian Academy (17-4) takes on Serra Catholic (14-5) at 11 a.m. The Warriors are trying to win their first WPIAL girls volleyball championship while the Eagles are hoping to win their second district crown in the last three years after winning gold in 2023.

• There will be one WPIAL girls volleyball consolation match, also at Peters Township on Saturday. A berth in the state Class A postseason is up for grabs when Frazier (13-4) takes on California (15-5).

• The top high school distance runners in the state converge on Hershey for the PIAA cross country championships. The races times are 9:30 a.m. for girls A, 10:15 a.m. for girls 2A, 11 a.m. for girls 3A, 11:45 a.m. for boys A, 12:30 p.m. for boys 2A and 1:15 p.m. for boys 3A.

• The PIAA singles and doubles girls tennis championships conclude with the semifinals and championship matches in both 3A and 2A. The event takes place at the Hershey Racquet Club.
