As we get closer to the midway point of section play in WPIAL boys soccer, the fight for first place in two Class 3A sections intensifies Tuesday.

The top four teams in Section 2-3A square off when Thomas Jefferson (7-0-1) visits Trinity (4-2) and Bethel Park (4-1-1) travels to Laurel Highlands (5-2).

The Jaguars are tied for first place with a section record of 4-0-1. They have won five straight games and have outscored their opponents in those matches, 22-1.

The Hillers are 4-1 in section play and are coming off a section loss last week to Bethel Park, 2-1, that ended their four-game win streak.

Speaking of BP, the Black Hawks are tied with TJ for the top spot at 4-0-1 and have won three in a row since playing to a 1-1 tie with Thomas Jefferson in late August.

They meet the Mustangs, who currently sit in fourth place with a 3-2 section record. They won four consecutive games before losing to Trinity last Tuesday, 1-0.

Another big match in Class 3A coming up Tuesday pits the top two teams in Section 4-3A when Moon (5-3) welcomes Chartiers Valley (3-2).

The Tigers are a perfect 4-0 in the section and have picked up three straight wins since losing a nonsection match to Central Catholic two weeks ago.

The Colts are a game behind with a section record of 3-1 with that lone section loss coming last week at home against West Allegheny, 3-1.

Fighting for 1st

On a busy Tuesday night of district girls volleyball, there are a handful of matches with first-place ramifications up and down the four classifications.

The top two teams in Section 1-4A will break a tie for first place when Upper St. Clair (5-2) hosts Peters Township (5-1).

Both the Panthers and the Indians are off to a 2-0 start atop the section.

In Class 2A, Waynesburg (6-0) visits Brownsville (7-0). Both teams are 4-0 and tied for first place in Section 3-2A.

Lawrence County foes square off when Shenango (4-0) travels to Mohawk (5-1). The Wildcats and Warriors are 3-0 and tied for first place in Section 4-2A.

In Class A, Rochester (3-3) hosts Beaver County Christian (2-3) on Tuesday. The Rams and Eagles are 2-0 and in first place in Section 2-A.

Finally, California (6-1) visits Frazier (4-1). In the fight for first in Section 4-A, the Trojans are 3-0 in the section and the Commodores are 2-0.

District golf sectionals

Picture perfect weather is expected Tuesday as the WPIAL continues the process of setting the field for the boys and girls individual golf championships.

Golfers can qualify for the district championships by meeting the target score at their respective section tournaments.

The 2025 WPIAL girls individual championships will be Oct. 1 at the Sewickley Heights Country Club.

The 3A boys championships are Sept. 29 at the Butler Country Club and the 2A individual finals are the next day on Sept. 30 at Valleybrook Country Club in McMurray.
