What to watch for in WPIAL sports on Sept. 2, 2025: Class 4A girls soccer kicks off section play

Section play finally begins Wednesday in WPIAL girls soccer Class 4A, along with four other sections in the other three classifications.
Two of the three 4A section champions from a year ago are in action Wednesday, and they both open up at home against 2024 playoff teams.
The defending Section 2-4A winner and WPIAL champion from a year ago, Peters Township (1-0-2), is home to a Canon-McMillan (2-1) team that finished in third place in their section, three games behind the Indians.
Last season’s Section 1-4A winner, Penn-Trafford (0-2), is still searching for its first win of the season when it welcomes Latrobe (0-2).
The Wildcats finished in third place in Section 1-4A a year ago, two games behind the champion Warriors.
Besides the three conferences in 4A, section play opens up Wednesday in Section 3-3A, where two-time defending WPIAL champion South Fayette is home to Oakland Catholic, Section 2-2A, Section 4-2A and Section 2-A.
Better late than never
Two WPIAL girls soccer teams that have yet to play a match this year are scheduled to take the pitch for the first time Wednesday in their Class A section openers.
After making the playoffs a year ago, California makes its season debut in a Section 2-A opener against Brownsville.
Jeannette was winless a year ago but has increased its roster size and will make its season debut Wednesday in a Section 4-A lid-lifter against visiting Ellis School.
Speaking of Section 4-A, three teams (Riverview, Springdale, Winchester Thurston ) are a combined 7-1 overall this season while three teams (Apollo-Ridge, Greensburg Central Catholic, Ellis School) are a combined 0-5 overall.
On Wednesday, Springdale (2-0) is home to Winchester Thurston (1-0) while Riverview (2-0) welcomes Apollo-Ridge (0-2) to Riverside Park.
D-7 vs D-8
There are 94 schools in District 7, also known as the WPIAL, that field girls varsity soccer programs.
In the City League or District 8, there are only two.
Both of those City schools will be in action Wednesday against WPIAL competition in nonsection matches.
Allderdice is a perfect 4-0 this season, including wins over WPIAL teams Ringgold, Baldwin and Connellsville in which it has outscored its opponents, 9-1.
On Wednesday, the Dragons visit Seneca Valley. The Raiders are in search of their first win with one loss and two ties.
Obama Academy is 0-3 this year is looking for its first goal after being shut out by Hampton, Gateway and Allderdice.
The Eagles host Fox Chapel (2-0) at Cupples Stadium on the South Side on Wednesday afternoon.
