The first round of the WPIAL boys Class 2A and girls Class 3A and 2A golf tournaments were held Monday with the final round in all three championships set for next week.

Junior Ellie Benson shot a 3-over-par Monday at the Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo to carry a three-stroke lead into the 3A girls final round at Butler Country Club on Monday.

Junior Pearl Lundgren shot a 3-over-par at the same venue and has an eight-stroke lead in the 2A girls championships with the final also Monday at Butler Country Club.

Senior Logan Crowe of McGuffey shot a 1-over-par at the Youghiogheny Country Club in Elizabeth and has a one-stroke lead over two golfers after the opening round of the boys 2A championships. The final round is Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.

On Tuesday, the top district golfers in boys Class 3A tee off.

The Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg will host the first round of the championships that will consist of 110 golfers.

There will be 26 groups of four golfers each and two groups of three golfers, with the first group teeing off at 8 a.m.

A year ago, Nick Turkowski of Penn-Trafford joined an elite group of nine boys golfers in WPIAL history to win two district individual golf championships. The senior has since graduated, leaving the door open for a new winner this fall.

The final round of the 3A boys individual golf championships will be Tuesday, Oct. 1 at the prestigious Oakmont Country Club.

Three for one

The second half of section play in WPIAL boys soccer begins Tuesday.

There are six sections where the race for first place is tied at the midway point of the regular season.

One race has three teams deadlocked at the top.

Section play resumes in Section 2-2A where Central Valley (9-1), Avonworth (7-2-1) and Quaker Valley (7-3) are all tied for first place with 7-1 section records.

They all split against each other head to head in the first half with the Antelopes shutting out the Quakers, the Quakers beating the Warriors in overtime and the Warriors edging the Antelopes.

Two of the three teams are home Tuesday to begin the second half.

Central Valley is home to Mohawk (1-7, 1-8), Avonworth hosts Riverside (2-6, 2-8) and Quaker Valley visits Beaver (4-3-1, 5-3-1), which currently occupies fourth pace.
