What to watch for in WPIAL sports on Sept. 25, 2024: 1st place up for grabs in Class 4A girls soccer

A busy Wednesday of WPIAL girls section soccer action has the spotlight on two of the races in Class 4A.
The top spot in Section 1-4A is at stake when first-place Penn-Trafford (8-3) hosts second-place Latrobe (4-2-1).
The Warriors are a perfect 5-0 in the section and had won eight straight before falling to Mt. Lebanon in a nonsection match Monday.
The Wildcats are 4-1 in section play and have won five straight contests since losing 3-2 to Penn-Trafford on Sept. 4. Latrobe has shut out four straight section opponents.
In Section 2-4A, the top four teams in the standings square off Wednesday.
First-place Peters Township (9-0-1) hosts third-place Canon-McMillan (7-1-1), while second-place Upper St. Clair (6-2-2) is home to fourth-place Baldwin (5-6).
The Indians are 4-0-1 atop the section while the Big Macs are only one game back at 3-1-1.
Canon-McMillan has won five straight matches since losing to Peters Township, 4-2, and tying Upper St. Clair, 1-1.
USC is 2-2-2 overall since beating Baldwin on the road on Sept. 4, 2-0.
Two grade-A matches
First place will be at stake Wednesday in a couple of Class A sections as well.
Two teams deadlocked for first place in Section 1-A square off when Riverside (4-3-2) visits Eden Christian Academy (5-5-1).
The Panthers and Warriors are both 4-1-1, a half-game ahead of third-place Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (4-2, 4-3).
The first meeting between Riverside and Eden Christian ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Panthers’ lone section loss was to OLSH while the Warriors’ section loss was to Freedom.
In Section 2-A, Waynesburg (4-1, 8-1) and Chartiers-Houston (4-1, 6-2) are tied for first place, a half-game ahead of Bentworth (3-1, 7-1).
In a key match Wednesday, Waynesburg hosts Bentworth. Chartiers-Houston hosts Beth-Center (1-4, 2-5).
In the first meeting of the season between Waynesburg and Bentworth, the Raiders fell to the Bearcats, 2-1. Since then, Waynesburg has won five straight.
Section doubles
With the singles district playoffs in the rearview mirror, girls doubles tennis takes center stage.
The WPIAL championship field will be determined Wednesday and Thursday with the 2024 girls tennis doubles sectionals.
The top 4 duos in each section from Class 3A and the top 3 finishers in each section from Class 2A will qualify for the WPIAL girls doubles tennis championships next week.
