We close out September with the final round of the WPIAL boys Class 2A golf championships.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart senior Jonah Schollaert leads the championship field following 18 holes with a 2-under par 69 from the first round played at the Hill Crest Country Club in Lower Burrell last week.

He has a two-stroke lead over Greensburg Salem sophomore Luke Sikora, who shot an even-par 71 in the first round.

Ligonier Valley senior Tyler Jones is in third place, five strokes back, while Riverview junior Ian Stempfer is in fourth place, six strokes off the lead.

Rounding out the top 10, three golfers are seven strokes behind after shooting a 76: Shady Side Academy junior Alex Avi, Neshannock junior Rocco Bautti and Sewickley Academy freshman Trey Susa. Riverview junior Rex Roberts and Charleroi sophomore Levi Large are eight strokes off the lead, and nine back are North Catholic junior Christopher Faber and Deer Lakes junior Christian Cappetta.

The final round is set to begin at 8 a.m. at the Valleybrook Country Club in McMurray.

The final rounds of the girls 3A and 2A final rounds will be played Wednesday.

Crown clashes

Now that we’ve reached the final two weeks of the WPIAL boys soccer regular season, a lot of attention is being paid to the chases to secure a spot in the top four of the section standings to clinch a playoff berth.

That will be the case again Tuesday with a busy slate of section games up and down the district’s four classifications.

However, some teams are still working hard to earn a section title.

First place or a share of the top spot is up for grabs in two sections Tuesday.

In Section 3-4A, first-place Fox Chapel visits second-place Seneca Valley.

The Foxes are 10-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in the section. Fox Chapel has won 10 straight matches, including three overtime victories in its last six contests.

The Raiders are also 10-1 overall this season, 5-1 in the section. Seneca Valley has four consecutive wins since losing at Fox Chapel in overtime 21 days ago, 2-1.

In Section 4-2A, things are a bit more complicated.

Charleroi is 7-0 in the section and 8-2 overall, Mt. Pleasant is 8-1 in the section and 9-4 for the season, and Yough is 7-1 in section play and 8-2 overall.

On Tuesday, Yough visits Mt. Pleasant while Charleroi travels to Greensburg Salem (3-5, 4-8).

Volleyball 2nd half

The second half of the regular season begins in WPIAL girls volleyball this week.

Teams in smaller sections will wait until Thursday to begin the second half of their section schedules; however, others start up with section rematches Tuesday.

One such match with at least a share of the Section 2-2A lead up for grabs will take place Tuesday when Seton LaSalle battles South Park.

The Rebels are in second place with a 7-1 section record and an overall mark of 11-1.

The Eagles are 10-1 for the season and a perfect 8-0 on top of the section.

The lone loss for Seton LaSalle this season came Sept. 4 when it lost to South Park, 3-1.
