Through the first week-plus of the WPIAL girls soccer season, each section has opened up play with teams having one or two games under their belts heading into the holiday weekend.
However, there are three girls soccer sections that have yet to play a conference match.
That all changes when Sections 3 and 4 in Class 2A and Section 4 in Class A finally begin their section schedules Wednesday.
There are three matches to open up section play in Section 3-2A. Mt. Pleasant visits East Allegheny, Southmoreland hosts unbeaten Woodland Hills, and Yough travels to Ligonier Valley.
In Section 4-2A, Keystone Oaks opens up at Brownsville while West Mifflin hosts South Park.
Finally, in Section 4-A, Aquinas Academy is home to Winchester Thurston and The Ellis School visits Bishop Canevin.
Midweek girls soccer showdowns
Two girls soccer teams with perfect 2-0 section records square off Wednesday at Cupples Stadium on the South Side of Pittsburgh when Allderdice hosts Seneca Valley.
The teams are tied for first place with North Allegheny in Section 1-4A.
Another early season battle for first place will take place in Class 3A.
Two teams with a combined 3-0 record in the section and 4-0 overall collide when Latrobe hosts Plum.
Fore for first
Four WPIAL girls golf teams will have a chance to take the lead in their section or forge into a tie for first place Wednesday.
In Section 1-3A, Moon will host Seneca Valley at the Moon Golf Club with first place up for grabs.
Both the Tigers and Raiders have one section loss.
Seneca Valley won the first meeting between the teams.
In Section 4-3A, Armstrong hosts front-running Fox Chapel at the Kittanning Country Club.
The River Hawks are in second place, one game behind the Foxes.
Fox Chapel beat Armstrong in the section opener last month.
