The Fox Chapel girls soccer program is used to the spotlight.

The Foxes were WPIAL Class 4A champions in 2023, and after relocating to Class 3A last season, won the Section 1-3A title and were the No. 1 seed in the 2024 Class 3A playoffs before falling in the title game to No. 2 South Fayette.

The program is a two-time district champion, winning gold in 2023 and 40 years ago in 1985.

Hampton is also a two-time WPIAL winner, but that was three decades ago when it captured district titles in 1994 and 1995.

The Talbots were a playoff team a year ago, finishing in third place in Section 1-3A, four games behind the Foxes.

This season, the teams are perfect in section and are a combined 9-2 overall.

On Wednesday, sole possession of first place is at stake when Fox Chapel visits Hampton at 7 p.m.

The Foxes won their first four matches before falling to North Allegheny. They bounced back from that defeat with their third section victory of the season Monday against Mars.

The Talbots lost their season opener to Montour but have won four straight, including section wins over Mars and Gateway by a combined score of 4-1.

Fit to be tied in 4A soccer

The battle for first place in a soccer section gets a little muddier when ties come into play.

Take, for instance, Sections 2 and 3 in WPIAL Class 4A girls soccer.

In Section 2-4A, Mt. Lebanon and Peters Township are tied for first place with 2-0 section records, while Upper St. Clair has yet to lose but is 1-0-1. Canon-McMillan sits in fourth place at 0-1-1.

On Wednesday, Mt. Lebanon (5-1 overall) hosts Canon-McMillan (2-2-1) and Peters Township (3-0-2) visits Upper St. Clair (4-0-2).

In Section 3-4A, Seneca Valley is 1-0 early on in section play, with both Pine-Richland and North Allegheny sharing 1-0-1 records.

On Wednesday, Seneca Valley (3-1-2 overall) is home to Pine-Richland (6-0-1).

Love singles tennis sectionals

The first WPIAL championships of the new school year take place next week with the girls singles tennis playoffs.

To set the field and help with seeding for both the 3A and 2A tournaments, the district will hold its singles sectionals Wednesday and Thursday.

The top four finishers in each Class 3A section and the top three finishers in each 2A section will qualify for the district playoffs.

Here are the locations for each of the nine tennis sectionals.

• Section 1-3A at Franklin Regional

• Section 2-3A at North Allegheny

• Section 3-3A at Fox Chapel

• Section 4-3A at Bethel Park

• Section 1-2A at Valley

• Section 2-2A at South Park courts

• Section 3-2A at Indiana

• Section 4-2A at Blackhawk

• Section 5-2A at Nichols Court at Sewickley Academy
