Wild-card match set for entry into WPIAL team rifle championships

Six of the seven rifle teams which will compete for the WPIAL team championship on Tuesday are set.

Waynesburg, McGuffey, Woodland Hills, Mt. Lebanon, Butler and Hempfield will do battle at 1 p.m. at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsman Club in Canonsburg.

Trinity, Penn-Trafford and West Greene will compete in a wild card match Friday for the seventh and final spot at the championships.

Each team at the championships will enter a maximum of 10 shooters, with the top eight shooters making up the team score.

The WPIAL squads completed section play Thursday.

In Section 1, Waynesburg captured the title, and McGuffey finished as the runner-up.

Section 2 saw Woodland Hills earn the top spot with Mt. Lebanon coming in second.

Butler and Hempfield finished as co-champions of Section 3.

The individual rifle championships also will be at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsman Club on Thursday. Each WPIAL member school is permitted to enter up to five competitors.

Schools that do not sponsor rifle as a WPIAL sport can be represented by only one shooter.
