The WPIAL champions took the mystery out of who was the top dog in a PIAA Class 3A boys volleyball first-round matchup at North Allegheny on Tuesday.
North Allegheny defeated Palmyra of District 3 in three games, following up on a win over Seneca Valley in an action-packed WPIAL championship game a little over a week ago.
Will Robertson took over in the contest and was especially effective on the occasions when Palmyra showed some life.
“He’s the guy that’s been the guy for a long time,” North Allegheny coach Dan Long said. “He’s been a starter since he was a freshman, and he is a special player who finds a way when it’s needed to be really good.”
Robertston ended his dominant day with 16 kills.
It was a strong first set for the WPIAL champions, making swift work of Palmyra with a 25-17 victory.
Although Palmyra made pushes at times, the thunderous arm of Robertson kept NA in the battle. Robertson ended the set with five kills, a furious start and warning to the Cougars.
Set 2 saw more domination by the Tigers gave them the 25-18 victory with one more set to go. Palmyra, down 21-11, made a push to make it 21-17, but the Tigers answered back.
Robertson once again dominated the set, adding five more kills. Another key player for the Tigers was Matthew LaMay, who added multiple aces with his rapid jump serve and blocking techniques.
North Allegheny came to play and Palmyra, making the three-plus hour drive, was a set away from falling to the beast of the WPIAL.
Palmyra started off fast with a 3-1 lead in the third set, but North Allegheny did not let things get out of hand.
The Tigers took full command toward the end of the set to advance to the PIAA quarterfinals. It was the tightest set of the match, with NA winning it 25-21.
On the day for Palmyra, David Palmer finished with six kills and the most effective serve. Johnny Moran played the entire game for the Cougars and gave them life when they were down.
“Johnny is one of those kids that never sweats and never really feels pressure, and he has a lot of high confidence and believes in himself and it shows when he plays,” coach John McInerney said.
North Allegheny will face Penn-Trafford in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
