Aiden Smith doesn’t feel like the job is any different. The Shaler senior setter knows that the stage he is set to perform on provides a higher level of difficulty.

The Titans graduated their entire lineup from a team that won the program’s first PIAA Class 3A title last season.

“Honestly, it all feels the same,” Smith said. “It’s about taking reps whenever you can get them. It’s tough at the same time. We scrimmaged those guys and saw what it took to get to the varsity level.”

Shaler’s young players have figured a lot of things out early on. The Titans are off to a 4-1 start, including a 2-1 mark in section play. The Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association has the Titans ranked sixth in the state in Class 2A.

“I think the guys have developed chemistry together,” Shaler coach Paul Stadelman said. “I definitely think every time they get reps, they are getting experience and getting better. This is a fun experience as a coach. During every match, during every game and timeout, there is something to talk about or something new to teach them.”

Shaler dropped to Class 2A when the PIAA did its realignment before this school year.

The Titans were placed in Section 2 with defending WPIAL Class 2A champion Mars. The Titans and Fightin’ Planets were supposed to have their first meeting April 8, but the game was postponed due to Mars not having enough players available.

The Planets are ranked eighth in the state.

Smith developed an interest in the sport during gym class. He joined the team and started playing for club teams when he was 16.

“I love the sport and wanted to play more of it competitively,” Smith said. “It’s fun seeing teams from all over the world.”

Despite the heavy losses to graduation, Stadelman kept a competitive schedule. Shaler has played Meadville, which is ranked No. 1 in 2A, twice already at Meadville and Derry. The Bulldogs swept the Titans in both meetings.

Shaler also plans to play at Central York, which is ranked No. 2 in 3A, and played former section rival North Allegheny, No. 6 in 3A, to open the season.

“Part of the expectation of the program is to maintain a level of expectation,” Stadelman said. “We want to be able to play against Manheim Central and York Suburbans.”

Nathan Myers, Jacob Crissman, Adam Hoffman and Richard O’Brien have led Shaler in hitting thus far. Justin Truong has contributed with his defense and serving.

Smith said the Titans have the makeup to be competitive again in the WPIAL playoffs.

“I think it’s the maneuverability of all the guys,” Smith said. “We are a versatile team. If players get out of position, we can still play well.”
