North Allegheny was the only defending champion to draw a No. 1 seed Friday when the WPIAL released brackets for the upcoming baseball playoffs.

The Tigers were seeded first in Class 6A. The other top seeds went to Pine-Richland in 5A, Indiana in 4A, Riverside in 3A, Neshannock in 2A and Serra Catholic in A.

The playoffs begin Tuesday with first-round games in Class A, 2A and 3A. Class 4A and 5A start play Wednesday while the Class 6A bracket begins May 19.

The finals are May 27-28 at EQT Park in Washington.

In Class 6A, the top seeds went to No. 1 North Allegheny (14-6), No. 2 Canon-McMillan (14-6), No. 3 Seneca Valley (14-6) and No. 4 Norwin (12-8). North Allegheny and Canon-McMillan were section champions.

The baseball committee had more decisions to make in Class 5A.

Section 3 co-champions Pine-Richland (17-3) and Shaler (13-6) were seeded first and third, respectively. Section 1 champion Plum (18-2) was second. Two other section winners, Bethel Park (16-4) and Thomas Jefferson (14-4), were seeded fourth and fifth.

In Class 4A, Indiana (19-1) earned the No. 1 seed after finishing last year as both the WPIAL and PIAA runner-up. Section 2 co-champions West Mifflin (15-5) and Elizabeth Forward (14-3) were seeded second and third.

Section 1 co-champions Beaver and Blackhawk were also split up in the 4A bracket. Beaver (11-8) was seeded fourth and Blackhawk (10-7) sixth. Belle Vernon (13-5), the third-place team from Section 2, was seeded fifth.

In Class 3A, last year’s WPIAL finalists drew the top two seeds. But it was runner-up Riverside (13-2) seeded first and defending champion Avonworth (17-3) second. Ellwood City (14-5) drew the third seed, Waynesburg (15-3) was fourth and South Park (12-6) was fifth.

Complicating the 3A bracket was a five-way tie for the Section 3 title. The baseball committee spread the five teams out in the bracket as No. 6 Deer Lakes (9-6), No. 8 Burrell (12-8), No. 10 Ligonier Valley (10-7), No. 12 Mt. Pleasant (12-6) and No. 13 Freeport (13-6).

The committee also split up section co-champions in Class 2A.

Neshannock (16-4) was seeded first while Shenango (14-5), the team it shared the Section 2 title with, received the fourth seed. Section 3 winner Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (13-7) was seeded second. Section 1 co-champions Burgettstown (12-4) and Fort Cherry (13-5) were seeded third and fifth.

In Class A, No. 1 seed Serra Catholic (16-3), No. 2 Eden Christian (14-4) and No. 4 Bishop Canevin (10-6) tied for the Section 3 title. Section 2 champion Leechburg (14-3) was seeded third, and Section 1 winner Greensburg Central Catholic (15-2) was fifth.

Bishop Canevin is a two-time defending champion in Class A.

Seton LaSalle (10-6), which won the past two Class 2A titles, moved to 3A this season. The Rebels were seeded 14th.
