WPIAL baseball playoffs roundup for May 16, 2019: Shaler beats Trinity on walk-off

Hunter Boyan’s walk-off single in the ninth inning lifted No. 5 Shaler to a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Trinity (10-11) in a WPIAL Class 5A first-round baseball game Thursday evening at North Allegheny.

Boyan also threw a nine-inning complete game, scattering six hits and striking out five batters.

Colin Harger was 3 for 4 for the Titans (12-7), who will play No. 4 Gateway (13-6) in the quarterfinals at a time, date and site to be determined.

South Fayette 5, Montour 4 — Tyler Sharp was 2 for 3 with a two-run home run to help No. 7 South Fayette (12-7) win a Class 5A first-round game at Boyce-Mayview Park. The Lions will play No. 2 Franklin Regional (16-1) in the quarterfinals.

Class 6A

Butler 5, Peters Township 3 — Nathan Stutz was 3 for 4, and David Leslie knocked in two runs as No. 12 Butler (7-13) upset No. 5 Peters Township (13-7) in a Class 6A first-round game at Boyce-Mayview Park. The Golden Tornado will play No. 4 North Allegheny (15-5) in the quarterfinals.

Upper St. Clair 6, Hempfield 3 — Andrew Casey smacked a two-run homer, and Nate Hamel settled in after a shaky start to lift No. 8 Upper St. Clair (13-6) to a Class 6A first-round win at West Mifflin.

USC (13-6) took the lead for good in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-run double by Grant Walnoha. The Panthers added a run in the fourth inning on Ryan Geisler’s two-run single.

John Malinak homered for Hempfield (11-10).

Upper St. Clair will play No. 1 Penn-Trafford (16-3) in the quarterfinals.

Seneca Valley 2, Connellsville 0 — Cory Greiner threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts, and Gabe Lawson doubled in a run to help No. 6 Seneca Valley (13-6) win a Class 6A first-round game at Fox Chapel. The Raiders will play No. 3 Bethel Park (14-3) in the quarterfinals.

Class 2A

Avonworth 17, Brownsville 2 (4 inn.) — Tim Stewart was 3 for 4 with five RBIs, and Turner Grau was 3 for 4 with four RBIs as No. 7 Avonworth (16-4) rolled to a Class 2A first-round win at Burkett Complex. The Lopes will play Serra Catholic in the quarterfinals.

Laurel 16, Chartiers-Houston 6 — Dom Wade knocked in three runs, and Luke McCoy, Kobe DeRosa and Landon Esposito all had two RBIs as No. 9 Laurel (11-6) won a WPIAL Class 2A first-round game at Burkett Complex.

Neshannock 9, Carlynton 4 — Preston Turk had three hits and three RBIs as No. 3 Neshannock (16-2) won a Class 2A first-round game at Seneca Valley. The Lancers will play No. 6 Carmichaels (16-2) in the quarterfinals.

OLSH 5, Riverside 0 — Jeff Zick threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as No. 5 OLSH (18-2) won a Class 2A first-round game at Seneca Valley. OLSH will play Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals.

Serra Catholic 5, Fort Cherry 3 — Mark Black and Patrick Brennan homered to help No. 2 Serra Catholic (18-2) win a Class 2A first-round game at Boyce-Mayview Park. Brennan was 3 for 3.

Seton LaSalle 1, Mohawk 0 — Drew Lafferty threw a one-hitter with three strikeouts to help No. 4 Seton LaSalle (16-2) win a Class 2A first-round game at Fox Chapel. Dan Boehme knocked in the lone run of the game.

Shenango 10, Brentwood 0 (6 inn.) — Crescenzo Calabria was 4 for 4 with two RBIs to help No. 1 Shenango (19-2) win a Class 2A first-round game at Chippewa Park. Marcus Fuller threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts. Shenango will play Laurel in the quarterfinals.
