WPIAL basketball playoffs roundup for Feb. 28: East Allegheny, Gateway girls advance to finals

The East Allegheny girls basketball team hasn't been to the WPIAL championship game since 1999.

Consider that streak over.

Behind 16 points for senior guard Amani Johnson, the second-seeded Wildcats defeated No. 3 Neshannock, 51-33, in a WPIAL Class 3A semifinal game Wednesday at Fox Chapel.

East Allegheny (24-0), which defeated Carlynton in the 1999 Class 2A championship game, now will play No. 1 Bishop Canevin (19-4) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Petersen Events Center.

Amaia Johnson had 11 points and Myla Bortoluzzi added 10 for the Wildcats.

Bella Burrelli scored 20 points for Neshannock (20-4).

Gateway 44, Chartiers Valley 42 — In the WPIAL Class 5A semifinals at Baldwin, Lexi Jackson scored 15 points and Mary Kromka added 12 as No. 7 Gateway (22-3) earned a spot in the title game.

The Gators will play No. 8 Oakland Catholic (17-8) in the finals at 3 p.m. Saturday at Petersen Events Center.

Mackenzie Wagner had 13 points, and Megan McConnell scored 12 for the defending champion Colts (18-7), the No. 6 seed.
