It was just another day, just another championship for the North Allegheny Tigers boys and girls swimmers. After building dominating day one leads neither team looked back and took the WPIAL Team Championships handily in day two.
Our first event was the girls 100-yard freestyle though and Tiger favorite Lauren McGrath would be upset by new WPIAL record holder, freshman, Olivia Livingston of Gateway who finished with a time of 49.53. She bested the old record held by Oakland Catholic’s Leah Smith since 2013 by almost a full second. Thats when the Tigers’ would go on the prowl and their own Mason Gonzalez would break his former record of 44.82 in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.17, that was Gonzalez’s 2nd WPIAL record of the week after setting the record the day prior in the 50-yard freestyle.
Later in the morning we would have the 400-yard freestyle relay which saw records fall on both sides the boys and the girls. The boys it was the North Allegheny Tigers breaking their rivals record from Upper St. Clair from 2014 with a final time of 3:03.20 breaking the Panthers former record of 3:03.63. Then on the girls side of things the Mt.Lebanon Blue Devils who did not want to go down without a fight not only upset the North Allegheny Tigers in the 400-yard freestyle but managed to break their 2014 record of 3:26.41 with a final time of 3:25.76. The Blue Devils team was comprised of Kathryn Nicholson, Sophia Donati, Emma Graham, and Trinity Ward.
This was the North Allegheny boys’ 6th straight WPIAL crown while the girls managed to win their 9th straight WPIAL crown in 3A swimming.
