WPIAL boys basketball teams battle for seeding in PIAA playoffs

The Path to the Pete is heating up with eight more boys basketball semifinals games in Class 6A, 5A, 3A and 2A on Monday and Tuesday before the six WPIAL championship games are set for later this week at Pitt’s Petersen Events Center.

At the same time, consolation games will continue as teams fight for PIAA boys basketball postseason berths and state basketball seeding.

The PIAA boys hoops playoffs begin with first round action March 7-8.

Here is an update of the WPIAL teams who have qualified and the final order in which they will be seeded out of District 7.

Boys 6A — 4 teams

Upper St. Clair Panthers, New Castle Red Hurricanes, Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils and Central Catholic Vikings have all clinched. The championship game will decide the No. 1 and 2 seeds and the consolation contest will determine the No. 3 and 4 seeds.

Boys 5A — 8 teams

The semifinals, finals and third-place consolation games will determine the 1-4 order between the Montour Spartans, Chartiers Valley Colts, Peters Township Indians and Mars Fightin’ Planets.

The two rounds of consolation games will determine the 5-8 order between the Latrobe Wildcats, Moon Tigers, Penn-Trafford Warriors and Uniontown Red Raiders. All have clinched state playoff berths.

Boys 4A — 5 teams

The winner of the 4A championship game between the Belle Vernon Leopards against the North Catholic Trojans will be the No. 1 seed and the loser will be No. 2.

The winner of the Avonworth Antelopes at Beaver Bobcats third-place consolation game will be No. 3 seed and the loser will be No. 4.

The final winner of the two rounds of consolation games in 4A involving the Elizabeth Forward Warriors, Knoch Knights, Deer Lakes Lancers and Central Valley Warriors will be the No. 5 seed.

Boys 3A — 7 teams

The semifinals, finals and third-place consolation games will determine the 1-4 order between the Aliquippa Quips, South Allegheny Gladiators, Mohawk Warriors and Bishop Canevin Crusaders.

The two rounds of consolation games in 3A will determine the 5-7 order between the Shady Side Academy Bulldogs, Keystone Oaks Golden Eagles, Ellwood City Wolverines and Southmoreland Scotties.

Boys 2A — 8 teams

The semifinals, finals and third-place consolation games will determine the 1-4 order between the Sewickley Academy Panthers, Jeannette Jayhawks, Neshannock Lancers and Union Scotties.

The winner of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at Greensburg Central Catholic fifth-place consolation game is No. 5 and the loser in No. 6.

The winner of the Chartiers-Houston at Northgate seventh-place consolation game is No. 7 and the loser in No. 8. All eight teams have clinched.

Boys A — 4 teams

Neighborhood Academy, Serra Catholic, Nazareth Prep and Aquinas Academy have all clinched. The championship game between Neighborhood Academy and Serra Catholic will decide the No. 1 and 2 seeds and the third-place consolation contest between Nazareth Prep and Aquinas Academy will determine the No. 3 and 4 seeds.
