WPIAL boys tennis roundup for April 4, 2024: Returning Gateway doubles champs square off in section finals

Gateway’s Adam Memije and Zidaan Hassan, who teamed up to win the WPIAL Class 3A doubles title last year, squared off in the Section 1-3A singles finals Thursday with Memije winning, 6-2, 6-4.
Memije and Hassan defeated Franklin Regional teammates in the semifinals in straight sets. Memije blanked Prem Nadasen, 6-0, 6-0, and Hassan dropped Colin Stalnaker, 6-1, 6-4.
Stalnaker beat Nadasen, 6-0, 6-4, in the third-place match. The top four finishers make the WPIAL tournament in Class 3A.
Section 2-3A – North Allegheny teammates Advaita Sircar and Evan Kaufman, the top two seeds, advanced to the section singles finals. Sircar beat Michael deVyver of Seneca Valley, 6-0, 6-0, and Kaufman battled past Josh Kim of North Hills, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, in the semifinals.
Section 3-3A – With rival schools squaring off in the championship and third-place matches, Fox Chapel’s Will Siegel claimed a section title with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Shady Side Academy’s Sai Chaudhry. The Bulldogs’ Chase Hartman won the third-place match, beating the Foxes’ Charlie Larsen, 6-0, 6-2.
Section 4-3A – Second-seeded Ari Plutko of Upper St. Clair mounted a comeback after being blanked in the first set to knock off returning WPIAL finalist Devin Collier of Bethel Park in a three-set section final, 0-6, 6-2, 6-3. Upper St. Clair’s Ronan Gibbons topped Peters Township’s Avi Sharma, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, in a three-set third-place match.
Section 1-2A – Top-seeded Landon Harclerode of Valley completed his run to a Section 1-2A championship with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over second-seeded Aydan Gross of Mt. Pleasant in the finals. Indiana’s Gabe Nettleton beat Greensburg Salem’s Silas Morris in the third-place match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The top three finishers make the WPIAL tournament in Class 2A.
Section 2-3A – South Park’s Jonah Jasek knocked off returning WPIAL Class 2A doubles champion Brendan Hallisey of Chartiers Valley, 6-1, 6-1, in a convincing win in the section singles finals. Steven Duing of South Park rallied to beat Rylan Barr of Thomas Jefferson for third place, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1
Section 3-2A – Top seed Jack Gillespie of Aquinas Academy picked up a straight-set win in the section finals, defeating Justin Garvey of North Catholic, 6-2, 6-3. Hampton’s Vitaliy Pikalo earned a spot in the WPIAL field with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Justin Kontul of North Catholic in the third-place match.
Section 4-2A – Returning WPIAL runner-up Severin Harmon scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sewickley Academy teammate Finn Wentz in the section finals. Blackhawk’s Ben Crefeld beat Beaver’s Zack Masters for third place, 7-5, 6-1
Section 5-2A – Top-seeded John Rohrkaste of Montour defeated third-seeded Chris Zhu of Winchester Thurston, 6-2, 6-0, for the section singles crown. Quaker Valley’s Chase Merkel defeated Winchester Thurston’s Nikou Nourbakhsh, 6-2, 6-4, in the third-place match.
