A look at the 2025-26 WPIAL Class 3A wrestling season:
The Favorite
Franklin Regional wrestling coach Matt Lebe does not mind that his team is the WPIAL Class 3A preseason favorite, but he said there are six or seven other teams that could wind up being the top team in early February.
“We are going to be in the hunt,” Lebe said. “There are a lot of good teams.”
Connellsville coach Bill Swink agrees with Lebe’s assessment.
“Matchups will be the key,” Swink said. “I like our chances; like most teams, we have holes to fill.”
The Panthers surprised many last year by defeating preseason favorite Connellsville in last year’s WPIAL team finals. The Falcons will be in the mix again after finishing third in the state. Norwin is another team to keep an eye on, as is Canon-McMillan, which will try to rebound from a disappointing season.
Others to look out for include Trinity, North Allegheny and Kiski Area.
Preseason Top 10
1. Franklin Regional (19-2 last season): The Panthers upset Connellsville to claim their third WPIAL title. They ended up fifth in the state. They return nine starters, including two PIAA qualifiers — junior Titus Colangelo (114 pounds) and sophomore Max Firestine (145).
2. Connellsville (15-3): The Falcons placed third in the state and second in the WPIAL. They return nine starters, including three PIAA place winners — juniors Tommy Gretz (107, sixth), Nolan Rice (121, eighth) and Kai Vielma (139, third). Senior Zach Franks (114) was a PIAA qualifier.
3. Norwin (16-3): The Knights qualified for PIAA team tournament after placing third in the WPIAL. They return 13 starters, including 2024 PIAA champion Landon Sidun (121). Sidun missed last year’s state tournament with an injury.
4. Canon-McMillan (8-10): The Big Macs are building around eight returning starters. Among the returnees are senior Collier Hartman, who placed fourth in the state at 133, and junior Brayden Collins at 215.
5. North Allegheny (15-3): The Tigers return 11 starters, including senior PIAA qualifier Bradyn McConneha (285).
6. Trinity (7-3): The Hillers return 12 starters and will be led by PIAA place winner Dom Canali, who took fifth at 127 pounds.
7. Kiski Area (14-5): The Cavaliers return 10 starters and are strong in the upper weights. A pair of PIAA place winners — sophomore Mario Hutcherson (172, sixth) and senior Cooper Roscosky (215, second) — lead the way.
8. Bethel Park (12-2): The Black Hawks return four starters from last year’s squad.
9. Butler (14-6): The Golden Tornado have nine starters back, led by senior Santino Sloboda, who placed third in the state at 127.
10. Penn-Trafford (7-9): The Warriors return 11 starters, including PIAA qualifiers in senior Dylan Barrett (114, seventh) and Luke DeSantis (121).
