Coming into the AAA WPIAL individual tournament, 160 pounds stood as the deepest weight class in the tournament, with eight wrestlers having the ability to win on any given night. On Friday night the results proved this to be true, as three of the top four seeds were upset.
The first came when top seed Dom Scalise of Latrobe lost to TeShan Campbell of Penn Hills 4-0. Campbell picked up 3 back points late in the third period while riding out Scalise to pick up the victory. The next seeded wrestler to do gown was number four seed Devin Austin, who lost a hard fought 7-4 match to Jonathan Avon of North Hills. Finally number two seed Brendan Burnham of Pine Richland gave up a late takedown to Waynesburg freshman Colin McCracken to drop a 4-3 decision.
Outside of 160 pounds, only two other wrestlers who were seeded in the top three in each weight class went down. At 120 pounds, number three seed Matt Oblock of Canon McMillan lost 5-2 to Brendan Hasson of Belle Vernon and at 220 pounds, Fred Mantsch of Hempfield defeated number two seed Will Bortmas of Butler 7-0.
Out of the remaining wrestlers in the championship bracket, only one unseeded wrestler is still alive. At 152 pounds, John Cole of Central Catholic followed up his fall of 5:11 over number five seed Paul Dunn of Bethel Park on Thursday by winning 5-4 over number four seed Nate Hall of West Allegheny.
Wrestling begins tomorrow at 10:30 AM with the second round consolations. Semi-finals are scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM. The consolation finals are scheduled for 5:30 PM Saturday with the finals set to begin at 7:00 PM. All the wrestling action can be heard here on the MSA Sports Network.
