Section play in WPIAL girls basketball is over for most teams and is down to one more game for a handful of others. The top four teams in each section qualify for the district playoffs. All teams tied for a playoff spot in which head-to-head does not break the tie all qualify for the postseason.
Trib HSSN’s exclusive coverage of the 2019 WPIAL girls basketball playoffs begins with the Basketball Playoff Pairings Show on Feb. 12.
The playoff fields for Class 6A, 2A and A are set.
In Section 1-5A, Moon is out even if it beats Montour on Friday because the Tigers lose the head-to-head tiebreaker with South Fayette. The winner of Latrobe at Penn-Trafford on Friday will qualify from Section 3-5A.
In Section 1-4A, if Apollo-Ridge loses to Freeport on Friday, Knoch will clinch a playoff spot because Greensburg Salem would win the three-way tiebreaker for third place and Apollo-Ridge and Knoch split in head-to-head so both would qualify. If Apollo-Ridge beats Freeport, Apollo-Ridge will finish third and Greensburg Salem would own the tiebreaker head-to-head with Knoch, so the Knights would be out.
In Section 1-3A, if Mohawk beats Beaver on Saturday, Ellwood City is eliminated. If Mohawk loses, then they are tied with Ellwood City for fourth place and because they split head to head, and both will qualify.
