The WPIAL golf individual postseason begins today for dozens of players looking to advance to the district finals and PIAA tournaments.

Boys teams can enter their top six players and girls teams their top five in section tournaments.

At each qualifying site, boys must shoot an 18-hole score within 10 shots of the course record. Girls must be within 20 shots of the course record.

Tournaments will run today through Thursday.

The top Class AA boys qualifiers advance directly to the championship Sept. 27 at Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley.

Top finishers in Class AAA advance to the semifinal round Sept. 25, with the top 18 from each semifinal go to the finals Oct. 2 at famed Oakmont Country Club.

The top 14 in Class AAA and top 18 in Class AA move on to the PIAA Western Regional Tournament Oct. 15 at Tom’s Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge Resort in Blairsville.

The top 12 in Class AA and top 22 in Class AA move on to the PIAA finals Oct. 22-23 at Heritage Hills Resort in York.

The top girls section finishers in Class AAA and AA advance to the finals Oct. 3 at Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley. From there, the top seven in Class AAA and top nine in Class AA at the finals move on to the PIAA Western Regional.

The top 11 players in each class at the regional move on to the PIAA finals.

Two players will be seeking their third straight WPIAL title. Skyler Fox, a junior at Riverside, has won back-to-back Class AA titles. The last boys player to win three consecutive championships was Frank Fuhrer III of Fox Chapel in 1974, ‘75 and ‘76. Ron Schwarzel of Brentwood also win three straight (1952-54).

Senior Caroline Wrigley of North Allegheny, meantime, has won the last two Class AAA girls titles. The last three-peat on the girls side came from Jodi Figley of Hopewell (1983-86).

Fox Chapel senior Gregor Meyer won the Class AAA title two years ago at Oakmont.
