WPIAL golfers in the running for PIAA titles after 1st round

Several golfers from the WPIAL put themselves in outstanding positions Monday to make a run at PIAA individual golf titles at Penn State University.

Among those players were returning champions Carson Kittsley of Fox Chapel in Class 3A boys and Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward in Class 3A girls.

Kittsley, a junior, and South Fayette’s Sam Bishop were two shots behind Daniel Boone’s Chase Yenser, who shot a 4-under par 68 on the White Course.

The WPIAL champion had two birdies (Nos. 8 and 9) and an eagle (No. 12) during his round. He recorded consecutive bogeys on No. 16 and 17.

Bishop’s teammate, Brady Newman, and Latrobe senior Jack Sacriponte are tied for fourth at 1-under par 71.

Thomas Jefferson’s Ty Hartman was tied for 13 at 2-over par.

Kiski Area senior Max Mottura shot a 7-over 79.

In Class 2A, Greensburg Salem sophomore Luke Sikora shot a 3-under par 69 and trails Scranton Prep’s Cole Powell by a shot. Powell shot a 4-under par 68.

Sikora had five birdies (Nos. 1, 3, 4, 10 and 11) and two bogeys (Nos. 5 and 14).

WPIAL champion Jonah Schollaert was fourth after shooting an even-par 72.

Tied for 11th at 3-over were Elizabeth Forward’s Aaron Didjunas, Shady Side Academy’s Alex Avi and North Catholic’s Christopher Faber.

Freeport’s Ethan Crooks shot a 7-over 79, Ligonier Valley’s Tyler Jones a 10-over 82, Riverview’s Ian Stempfer and Deer Lakes’ Christian Cappetta shot a 14-over 86.

Morgan, a senior who is the reigning WPIAL champion and returning PIAA champion, shot a 3-under par 69 to grab a 5-shot lead after the first-round on the Blue Course

Tied for second was Peters Township’s Ellie Benson, a junior, who shot a 2-over par 74.

Peters Township’s Betty Glyptis was tied for 12th. She shot a 6-over 78.

Three players, including Shady Side Academy sophomore Alyssa Zhang, a two-time WPIAL champion, are tied for first in Class 2A at 4-under par 68.

She is tied with Madison Koshko of St. Joseph’s in District 6 and West Middlesex’s Kate Sowers.

Chartiers-Houston sophomore JoJo Jaskulski is eighth at 6-over par 78.

Greensburg Central Catholic senior Alayna Stawovy is tied for ninth at 7-over, while teammate Kennedy Kelly is 21st at 13-over.

The final round is on Tuesday.
