WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week Four 2013

A historic week in the WPIAL saw the end of the Nation’s longest winning streak, overtimes, dramatic wins, upsets and the like. In all, Week 4 was the best of the 2013 season and the Top Plays are a direct indication of why.

#1 Monessen 42, Clairton 24

The team that started it all also put it to an end. Clairton’s Nation-long 66-game winning streak came to an end on Friday at the hands of the first team they beat to start the streak in 2009, the Monessen Greyhounds. Clairton, hurt by penalties and turnovers, were not able to overcome the speed of Monessen, particularly Clintell Gillaspie. Gillaspie ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while catching three passes for 157 yards and a pair of scores. None were as big as his comeback-killing, 4th quarter 60-yard touchdown catch and run that put a nail in the coffin of “The Streak.”

#2 Baldwin 20, Mt. Lebanon 19 (OT)

It had been 9 years since Baldwin defeated their South Hills rival Mt. Lebanon. But led by a strong first half of defense and a revitalized passing attack, the Highlanders were able to score an important Southeastern Conference road win. After a late Mt. Lebanon field goal to tie the game at 13-13, the Blue Devils would score on their first overtime possession. However, Robbie Constantino, who made two field goals and an extra point in the game, would shank the point after wide right, opening the door for the Highlanders. They would capitalize, as Doug Altavilla would hit a wide open Luke Smorey for a 10-yard touchdown on their first offensive play of overtime. Prajal Sharma would connect on the PAT, giving Baldwin the dramatic overtime win.

#3 North Allegheny 29, Pine-Richland 28

After experiencing their first loss to a WPIAL opponent in 32 games, North Allegheny got another scare on Friday night at home against rival Rine-Richalnd. After scoreing a 4th quarter touchdown to bring North Allegheny’s lead to 29-28, a bad snap would result in a missed extra point to tie the game. But the Rams would get the ball back and drive the field, giving themselves a chance at a game-winning field goal with 0:12 left. However, the 40-yard field goal attempt by Ben Engel would come up just short, giving the Tigers the meaningful Conference victory.

#4 Avella 27, Jefferson-Morgan 26 (OT)

Because of North Allegheny’ Week 3 loss and Clairton’s Week 4 loss, the Avella Eagles had a chance to grab the longest winning streak in the WPIAL. Yes, you read that right. After playing to a tie, both teams would score touchdowns on their first overtime possessions. Avella would make their extra point, giving them a one-point lead after Jefferson-Morgan’s following score. But Jefferson-Morgan, whose kicker was injured, decided to go for the win on a two-point conversion and the win. But Avella’s Santino Paris would intercept a Rece Henneman pass, giving the Eagles their fifth win in a row, the longest in the WPIAL.

#5 Greensburg Central Catholic 35, Waynesburg 20

This last play of the Week 4 Plays of the Week was sent into us from Chase Balla. It’s of a spectacular one-handed catch by GCC RB Ty Balla, who accounted for all five of the Centurions’ touchdowns. The play has begun to receive National attention. If you have a play you think is worthy of making the list, send us a video or let us know!
