The WPIAL has put the Imani Christian boys basketball program on probation for one year for “lack of institutional oversight,” the result of a three-month investigation by the league.
The school’s athletic administration and boys basketball coach Khayree Wilson also were censured — meaning a public admonishment from the WPIAL board. But WPIAL executive director Scott Seltzer said the board found no recruiting violations, which could’ve led to more serious discipline.
The WPIAL shared its decision Friday.
A team on probation could face heightened discipline if any additional violations occur.
The WPIAL launched the investigation after its board held an eligibility hearing Sept. 30 for sophomore Kieshaun Demus, a transfer from North Hills to Imani Christian. The WPIAL found Demus had participated in summer league contests with the Imani Christian basketball team prior to completing his enrollment at the private school in East Hills.
Imani Christian administrators blamed the violation on a “unique quirk” in the enrollment process that since was fixed. The school said new students “are not finally enrolled until they participate in a summer Enrichment Academy in July even though all other aspects of the enrollment process are completed in May or June … .”
The WPIAL ruled Demus ineligible in September, a decision later overturned by the PIAA.
Seltzer said Imani Christian was disciplined Friday for “the lack of institutional oversight with respect to enrollment process of the summer enrichment program that is required before students are fully enrolled.”
The WPIAL initially launched its investigation to look into “possible recruiting violations and administrative and institutional oversight issues” at Imani Christian.
