Every WPIAL baseball and softball section will have at least one new team next season in the updated spring sports alignments approved by the WPIAL board of directors.
Among the changes for 2019, the WPIAL reduced the number of lacrosse sections to two per classification. Each lacrosse team will play every opponent in its section just once, creating an eight- or nine-game section schedule.
In softball, Class 6A will shrink from 19 to 16 teams, so the WPIAL reduced the number of sections from three to two. In the reduction, Fox Chapel, Hempfield and Norwin will be shifted to a section that includes Butler, North Allegheny, North Hills, Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley.
The other 6A section will have Baldwin, Bethel Park, Brashear, Canon-McMillan, Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township, Allderdice and Upper St. Clair.
In baseball, Class 2A will increase from 24 teams to 29, so the WPIAL added a fourth section.
