Having just started her final season of high school golf, and after years of evaluating her options as a top player in the state, Elizabeth Forward’s Mya Morgan found her fit as she committed to Central Michigan to continue her academic and athletic careers.
The decision has been a long time coming for Morgan, who has long shown that she would have a great chance at making a Division I golf team.
Between a state championship last season and a WPIAL title the year before, Morgan has consistently stood out from her peers, making her a perfect recruit for a high-level program.
“I have been speaking to coach (Ryan) Williams from CMU for several months,” Morgan said via text. “He recently visited Pa. to watch my play in the Pennsylvania women’s amateur. During his visit, I was able to spend time with him and talk about his program. I also had an opportunity to visit the Central Michigan campus, and was able to see firsthand their amazing athletic and academic programs. I’ve spent time with multiple coaches and toured a lot of campuses, but there was something so special about CMU.
“First, the university is spending over $11 million on an insane indoor and outdoor practice facility, which will be located on campus. This facility will be the absolute premier golf training facility in the (Mid American Conference). This is exactly where I want to be to develop my game further. Second, Coach Williams has a disciplined, focused and an elite mindset. My goal for college is to get a top-notch engineering degree, but I also want to go to a place where winning championships is a top priority. I feel that I found this with Coach Williams and Central Michigan.”
For Morgan, the announcement was a culmination of hard work and dedication over many years.
“Announcing my commitment to Central Michigan and Coach Williams has been one of the highlights of my life. It was also a relief,” Morgan said. “College golf recruiting is no joke, and the past year and a half has been filled with many highs and lows. I feel that I found a program where I could be myself, but also will also push me to perform at my highest level possible. I am not afraid of pressure and expectations. Coach Williams has high expectations and I will need to bring my best every single day. But at the end of the day, I know my college is paid for, and I’m going to walk away with an amazing engineering degree that will carry me through my lifetime.”
Now, Morgan will have peace of mind when she enters the final year of her high school career.
She’s hoping to make it a great one as one of, if not the best golfer in Elizabeth Forward history.
“My goal for my senior season of golf at EFHS is to win a team WPIAL championship,” she said. “I have been blessed to achieve every one of my individual high school golf goals, but I’m missing one thing. I want that team championship more than anything else. Ever since my freshman year, I’ve had the opportunity to go to the state championship at Penn State. But, I’ve gone as an individual. This year, I want all of my best friends to have the opportunity, and we compete together. And I know we can do it.
“This is the strongest team in EFHS history. Even on a bad day, we’re shooting in the 150s-160s. It’s now or never, and we can absolutely make it happen. I am mentally preparing that I need to bring my best game possible for every match, which means under par or significantly under par. This is how I can help my team step-by-step, to get to where we need to be to win our championship.”
After that, she’ll be off to Central Michigan to make her mark on the MAC. There, she’ll have to adjust to the college style of play while also balancing new advanced coursework.
“There is going to be a lot of travel in college golf. I’m accustomed to travel for tournaments, but Central Michigan has a robust and challenging travel schedule,” Morgan said. “At a minimum, CMU will be traveling to at least eight tournaments throughout the United States, including Arizona, California, North Carolina, South Carolina and multiple trips to Florida. This will all occur during the fall and spring semesters. This does not include fall and spring training weeks in Florida.
“While an amazing opportunity, this is going to take a lot of discipline academically. The team will spend a lot of time away from campus for travel. I need to make sure I have my golf game at an elite level, while maintaining my academic performance.”
When it comes to school, Morgan is hoping to earn an engineering degree and advance her schooling even further.
“My goal at Central Michigan is to earn either an electrical or mechanical engineering degree. But, my ultimate goal is to obtain my master’s degree in quantum finance,” Morgan said. “I will need to obtain an engineering degree first and a master’s degree in finance to get to my ultimate goal. I have not ruled out a dual major in engineering and finance at CMU, but ultimately, I am building my foundation for my master’s degree to be a Quant. In a nutshell, I love math and I love physics. Crunching numbers and dominating the stock market is my future.”
