Friday was a great day for both the Shady Side Academy girls and the Quaker Valley boys as the Class AA WPIAL Swimming Championships got underway at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh. Frigid temperatures forced a two-hour delay but, once the swimmers hit the water, the competition was intense.

The Lady Indians got things started on the right note in the first event as they took team gold in the 200 Yard Medley Relay as swimmers Caroline Colville, Heather Grune, Ashley Azzarello and Jeanne Lauer swam to a time of 1:52.10. They appeared to be destined for silver before it was ruled that Indiana was DQed after finishing first in the event. Shady Side Academy girls then went on to win team gold in the final race of the day as well, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. The lone WPIAL record of the day was recorded by Geibel’s Emily Zimcosky who beat her WPIAL record time from a year ago by 0.03, recording a time of 23.10 in winning the gold medal in the 50 Yard Freestyle.

On the boys side, Quaker Valley got things rolling early on by winning team gold in the 200 Yard Medley Relay behind excellent performances by Matthew Kwalick, Kyle Hrabovsky, Griffin Nincke and Fritz Wiltman. Their time of 1:39.98 was nearly a half second better than West Allegheny. They also got great individual performances from Griffin Nincke (bronze medal in 200 Yard Freeestyle), Matthew Kwalick (silver medal in 200 Yard IM) and won team gold in the final event, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.
