Derry has been to the WPIAL wrestling team finals three times and is seeking its first title.

But before it can worry about the championship match, the No. 2-ranked Trojans (17-2) must get by talented No. 3 seed McGuffey (15-4) in the Class 2A semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday at AHN Arena at Peters Township High School.

The winner will face the winner of the No. 1 Burrell (12-1)/No. 4 Quaker Valley (12-4) match at 11:30 a.m.

“We can’t worry about winning the title because our focus has to be on McGuffey,” Derry coach Troy Dolan Jr. said. “We’ll have to look at our opponent and create a game plan. McGuffey is a very good team.”

Derry’s game plan Wednesday against Avella and Burgettstown worked to perfection. The Trojans dominated both teams, beating Avella, 68-6, and Burgettstown, 49-18. McGuffey also dominated its opponents, whipping Avonworth, 62-11, and Laurel, 46-23.

Both are loaded with talent. Derry is led by freshman Rocco DeCario (20-6) at 107 pounds, senior Anthony Mucci (29-5) at 133, sophomore Mason Horwat (30-3) at 152, junior Ewan Olson (30-6) at 160 and sophomore Brady Brown (30-4) at 189.

In the victories against Avella and Burgettstown, the Trojans dominated the lightweights and won several in a row.

“We’re capable of running off wins,” Dolan said. “I’m sure we’ll be in for a tough battle.”

Burrell will rely on junior Cam Baker (21-5) at 127, junior Jacob Stewart (23-5) at 133, junior Julian Bertucci (25-6) at 139 and senior Isaac Lacinski (28-7) at 172 to carry the load.
