WPIAL tennis state title contenders bow out in semifinals

The three WPIAL teams still in the hunt for a PIAA tennis championship after Friday night’s matches bowed out in Saturday’s semifinals in Hershey.
In Class 3A, WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy (19-1) lost 3-1 to defending state champ Lower Merion (20-0). Cassie Lapina won in straight sets at No. 2 singles for the Bulldogs.
In Class 2A, WPIAL champion Quaker Valley (13-2) fell 3-1 to defending state champ Lower Moreland (17-3). The No.1 doubles team of Jane Lenhard and Kate Miller won in straight sets for the Quakers.
Also in Class 2A, WPIAL runner-up North Catholic (14-4) lost 3-1 to District 2 champ Scranton Prep (20-0). The No. 2 doubles team of Kaitlyn Abel and Claire Elliott won in straight sets for North Catholic.
