WPIAL Week Seven Saturday’s Scholastic Starz

It was a bloated Saturday of WPIAL football action with seven games on the docket. So since we are in Stetch Run mode, we don't have to feel guilty about enjoying extra pleasures and get a little bloated on great performances from the Seventh Saturday of the season.

Connor Slomka and Ernest Williams – Pine-Richland

Like any great duo through the years, one delivers the early shots while the other comes in and finishes the deal. That was the story of the Pine-Richland ground attack Saturday at Shaler as Connor Slomka rushed for 163 yards and two first half scores, while Ernest Williams came in and ran for 101 yards and two second half scores as the Rams beat the Titans 49-6 in a Class AAAA Northern Seven Conference contest.

Jordan Edmunds – Jeannette

There was very little at stake in this Class AA non-cpnference fray as Jeannette has already wrapped up a playoff spot while host Shady Side Academy controls it's own destiny in the final two weeks, however don't tell Jordan Edmunds the game meant nothing. Like a bull in a china store, Edmunds pounded the SSA defense between the tackles, rushing for 169 yards and four touchdowns as the Jayhawks improved to 6-1 overall with a 31-26 dandy over the Indians.

Tyler Boyd – Clairton

Clairton found themselves in rare air early in their Class A Black Hills Conference showdown at Dormont Stadium as they trailed 6-0 to Bishop Canevin. Winning streak in jeopardy? Not quite says Tyler Boyd, who took control of the game by rushing for 157 yards and scoring four touchdowns as the Bears registered their 54th consecutive win with a 53-15 'comeback' victory over the Crusaders.

Drew Robinson – Union

In a pivotal Class A Big 7 Conference matchup Saturday night, Drew Robinson helped prove that Union is legit as they moved closer to a WPIAL postseason berth. Robinson rushed for 224 yards on only 13 carries for a 17+ yard per carry average while scoring two touchdowns on runs of 73 and 53 yards as the Scotties beat the host Shenango Wildcats 33-7 to move to within one victory of the playoffs.

Vinny Piccolino – Riverview

On a postcard afternoon at Riverside Park in Oakmont, Vinnie Piccolino enjoyed a big day while leading Riverview to their second win in three weeks. Piccolino had 152 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns on runs of 46, 12 and four yards to lead the Raiders to a 27-19 triumph over the Leechburg Blue Devils in a Class A Eastern Conference matchup.

Jonathan Magusiak – South Side

It may be too little to late for contention purposes, but there is reason to smile about football again in Hookstown. After losing every game a year ago and their first five games this season, South Side has won two in a row thanks to Jonathan Magusiak, who completed 12 of 15 passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns, plus he scored on a short run and booted two field goals in the Rams 40-18 whacking of the West Shamokin Wolves.
