Deer Lakes rode the legs of Zier Williams to outlast Class 2A No. 3 ranked South Park, 35-22, in a nonconference football game Friday night.
In a game with many twists and turns, the Class 3A Lancers moved to 2-0 on the season.
Williams, the senior running back, scored three touchdowns.
After a lengthy lightning delay to start the game, he got the scoring underway with a 1-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, South Park’s Kenyan Brown scored on a 99-yard return. With a successful 2-point conversion, the Eagles took an 8-7 lead. This was the first of four lead changes throughout the night.
Deer Lakes separated itself in the second quarter, scoring twice and leading 21-8. Lancers quarterback Jake Fleischer found Dom Sciubba for a 7-yard touchdown pass.
After a South Park fumble, Williams scored his second touchdown from 2 yards. With 6 minutes, 13 seconds to play in the first half, Deer Lakes led 21-8.
The Eagles scored before halftime with a 12-yard touchdown run from quarterback Robert Lenzi. Lenzi scored again at the start of the third quarter, this time from 47 yards out, to give South Park a 22-21 advantage.
The Lancers responded with 14 unanswered points. A 38-yard touchdown run by Fleischer was followed by Williams’s third touchdown. The 6-yard carry sealed the deal for Deer Lakes.
South Park turned the ball over three times in the loss. Two fumbles and a late Lenzi interception proved costly.
Despite the turbulence, Deer Lakes did not commit a turnover in the win.
With his three scores, Williams finished the game with 26 carries for 118 yards. Fleischer was 11 of 17 for 90 yards passing, with both a rushing touchdown and passing touchdown.
Now 1-1, South Park will host Keystone Oaks next Friday. Deer Lakes will travel to Derry.
