A new champion was crowned Thursday in the 2011 WPIAL Individual Rifle Championships at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club in Canonsburg. McGuffey senior John Hupp bested the rest of the field to win his first district shooting championship.

Hupp beat out Avella's Sylvia Dreistadt on center target shots after both fired a 200-20x. Hupp had six center targets while Dreistadt had four.

Defending champion Chelsea Fonner of Trinity finished fourth behind Hupp, Dreistadt and Jacque Zollner of Woodland Hills (200-19x). The senior Fonner won the event last year with a 200-19x, the same score she registered on Thursday.

The top 13 shooters at the WPIAL tournament advance to next week's state championship.

The other qualifiers finishing 5th through 13th on Thursday were:
(200-19x)
Nicole Metz – Hempfield
Colin Letsom – Woodland Hills
Brigitte Byrne – Mount Lebanon
Emma Uchida – Trinity
(200-18x)
Matt Komisars – Woodland Hills
Salena Helmkamp – McGuffey
Skylar Bittner – Butler
