13 WPIAL girls volleyball teams advance to PIAA playoffs

It was 47 years ago that Norwin defeated York Suburban to win the 1976 PIAA Class 3A girls volleyball championship. It was the first of 52 state titles captured by WPIAL teams.

Last year, North Allegheny in Class 4A and Freeport in 2A added to that total.

Now, 13 District 7 teams are set to begin their quest for state gold heading into the opening round.

Here is the rundown of first-round matches on the western side of the PIAA bracket in the girls volleyball state playoffs.

All opening-round matches are set for Tuesday.

Class 4A

North Allegheny (16-1) at McDowell (11-7) at 6 p.m.

Dallastown (22-2) at Council Rock South (19-3) at 5 p.m.

Canon-McMillan (15-4) at State College (7-8) at 5:30 p.m.

Upper Merion (20-4) at Landisville Hempfield (18-0) at 6 p.m.

Class 3A

Oakland Catholic (15-4) at Hampton (21-0) at 6 p.m.

Greencastle-Antrim (18-2) at Bald Eagle (18-2) at 5:30 p.m.

North Catholic (18-1) at Warren (15-2) at 6 p.m.

Thomas Jefferson (17-2) at DuBois (15-2) at 6 p.m.

Class 2A

Corry (15-2) at Beaver (20-0) at 6 p.m.

Quaker Valley (16-3) at Kane (12-6) at 6 p.m.

Freeport (20-2) at North East (17-2) at 6 p.m.

Avonworth (14-7) at Philipsburg-Osceola (22-0) at 6 p.m.

Class A

Cochranton (16-3) at Serra Catholic (20-0) at 6 p.m.

Homer-Center (13-6) at Elk County Catholic (17-0) at 6 p.m.

Bishop Canevin (19-2) at Berlin-Brothersvalley (23-2) at Windber at 7 p.m.

Frazier (19-2) at Maplewood (16-3) at 6 p.m.
