The Lady Bucs, competing in Class A, edged Laurel to repeat as WPIAL champions.

Similarly, the Lady Golden Rams successfully defended their title in Class AA, while Hopewell came in second.

In Class AAA, the Lady Titans edged Butler for the gold, in the process knocking off defending champion Pine-Richland.

In the third-annual event, 32 total teams competed, up from last year’s turnout of 25 teams. Of those teams, 15 qualified for the PIAA Championship.

The teams competed in one of three groups, based on the size of the squad. Six of the 15 teams that competed in the small varsity bracket qualified for the PIAA Championship, with Butler taking first place.

Additionally, three teams qualified for the state finals from each the medium varsity, with Shaler prevailing, and the large varsity, in which North Allegheny took first. The final three qualifiers were determined through at-large bids.

Each team was graded on a scale of 100 points, with 30 points for the cheer portion and 70 points in the music portion.

The PIAA Competitive Spirit Championship will be held on Jan. 23-24 in Hershey.
