After having a tough day on Thursday, the WPIAL rebounded with a strong day on Friday to set up the medal round bouts on Saturday. Out of the 24 wrestlers that came into action Friday, there will be 16 of them coming home with a medal from Hershey. 14 of those wrestlers started the day in the Quarterfinals, and 9 finished the day set to wrestle in the state finals.

Those expected to make the finals did, as Gavin Teasdale of Jefferson Morgan (113), George Phillippi of Derry (138), Mike Carr of South Fayette (145), Jake Wentzel of South Park (160), Greg Bulsak of South Park (182), and Jake Beistel of Southmoreland (285) all found their way to the title match with relative easy.

Three wrestlers may have surprised some folks with their performance on Friday. Two were at 152 pounds, where Damon Greenwald of Burrell and GioVonne Sanders of Jeannette were both victorious and will wrestle each other in a rematch for a state title on Saturday. It took two overtimes, but Greenwald was able to get by Nate Newberry of Biglerville 5-1. For Sanders, a second period takedown stood to help him defeat Nick Monico of Saegertown 3-2. This will be a rematch from the WPIAL Championships two weeks ago, where Greenwald defeated Sanders 3-2.

The other wrestler who some may not have expected to be in the finals was Bill Bowlen of Jefferson Morgan. He picked up a takedown in the third period against Connor Frey of Lehighton to win 3-1. Bowlen will wrestle Gavin Hoffman of Montoursville for the state championship Saturday.

The medal round matches for AA of the PIAA tournament will begin Saturday at 2:00 PM. You can listen to all the action here on the MSA Sports Network.

While the WPIAL did not start as hot as they had hoped on Friday, they did finish strong. 30 of the possible 51 wrestlers who started the second day still remained alive and have guaranteed themselves a medal. Out of the 30, 17 of those wrestlers find themselves in the semi finals with an opportunity to win a gold medal.

The biggest surprise came at 113 pounds, where returning state runner up Gage Curry of North Hills lost in the quarterfinals to Matt Parker of Pennridge 3-2. Also losing at 113 pounds was Logan Macri of Canon McMillan. His loss to Julian Clebove of Northampton 5-1 in the quarterfinals may not have shocked many, but his loss in the consolations did, as Macri was stuck on his back and pinned in 20 seconds by Luke Werner of Liberty to be eliminated from the tournament.

In a battle of what many thought would be the best match of the tournament, Luke Pletcher of Latrobe was able to defeat Sammy Sasso of Nazareth at 138 pounds. Pletcher won the bout due to a penalty point, which was given when Sasso scissored the head of Pletcher in the second period. They would each trade escapes, but the penalty point made the difference with Pletcher winning 2-1.

Another exciting bout happened at 182 pounds, where the top two ranked wrestlers squared off in the quarterfinals. Jake Woodley of North Allegheny was trailing late in the third period to Kyle Gentile of Pennridge 3-1 before Woodley would rally to score a takedown with 20 seconds left in the bout to force overtime. In the overtime period, it was Woodley who stayed aggressive and scored another takedown to win the bout in overtime, 5-3.

The most impressive weight for the WPIAL on Friday was at 220 pounds, where they were able to get three wrestlers into the semi finals. Jacob Robb of Armstrong continued his dominance, pinning second ranked Drew Boob of Selinsgrove in 1:45. He will wrestle Greensburg Salem’s Derek Berberick in the semi finals, as he defeated J’M Wedderburn of Hershey 8-6. The final wrestler to advance was Peters Township’s Michael McAleavey, who cruised to a 7-1 victory over Garrett Zobel of LaSalle.

Wrestling gets started for AAA on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM with the semi finals and fourth/fifth round consolations. The medal round matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM. All the wrestling action can be heard tomorrow here on the MSA Sports Network.
