The AAA WPIAL Championships started Friday at Penn Hills with news of wrestlers missing. A pair of scratches to seeded wrestlers adjusted two different weight classes. The first was at 132 pounds, where number five seed Ryan Yocum of Trinity was a scratch. The other was at 152 pounds where Micah Kusturiss of Canon McMillan, who was a four seed, was a scratch due to an ankle injury.

After the scratches were processed, the opening preliminary round did not see many upsets take place. The top five seeds in every weight class were victorious with one exception. That was at 182 pounds, where number four seed Mike Mahon of Fox Chapel fell to Brad Nagy of Kiski Area. The match was tight until late in the third, when Nagy was able to put Mahon onto his back and pin him in 4:51.

The quarterfinals did not provide many more upsets, as the top seeds continued to prevail. The biggest upset was at 152 pounds, where number two seed Dan Contraguerro of Franklin Regional dropped a major decision loss to David Kelly of Pine Richland 12-4. The other top four seeds not to advance into the semi finals were all number four seeds, and each of those losses were to number five seeds. The first was Brock Godzin of Belle Vernon, who lost to Doug Gudenburr of Ringgold 1-0. The second was Godzin’s teammate at 145. Scott Joll of Belle Vernon fell to AJ Boeh of North Allegheny 10-3. The final number four seed to lose in the quarterfinals was Montour’s Roman Macek at 220, who was pinned by Chad Kuhn of Kiski in 2:49.

Out of the 56 top four seeds in the AAA WPIAL Championships, 51 of those wrestlers advanced into Saturday’s semi finals. Three teams led the way, with Belle Vernon, Kiski, and North Allegheny all having 6 wrestlers still alive in the winners bracket. Not far behind were Canon McMillan and Waynesburg, who had 5 wrestlers’ each move into the semi finals Saturday.
