The Southwest Regional Tournament in AA moved up one week, and to a different location, but the WPIAL produced similar results to a year ago. From the confines of Ed Frey Arena, Kovalchick Complex at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the WPIAL was able to produce 34 state qualifiers, down only one from last season.

While the number of wrestlers going to Hershey from the WPIAL remains similar, the amount of champions was not quite up to par. The WPIAL featured many dominant wrestlers a year ago, en route to producing 7 champions out of the Southwest Region. This year, only 2 were champions, and both won over fellow WPIAL foes.

The first was at 126 pounds, where Jefferson Morgan junior Gavin Teasdale remained undefeated in his high school career. For the second straight week, Teasdale defeated Dillan Jeffrey of Burrell, this time by technical fall 17-2 in 2:46. Teasdale used two five points move to jump out to a big lead early and never looked back.

The other champion for the WPIAL came at 182 pounds, where Dominic Fundy of Beth Center stayed undefeated during his sophomore campaign. In a rematch of the Section 2 Championships, Fundy was able to upend Derry’s Dominic DeLuca in the finals, 7-2. Fundy put together three total takedowns to control a match that never seemed in doubt.

The state tournament will feature 20 WPIAL schools in two weeks in AA. Of the 34 wrestlers, Burrell leads the pack with 5 state qualifiers. Freedom is not far behind with 4 wrestlers advancing to Hershey. Chartiers Houston and Derry will each feature 3 wrestlers, while South Side, Beth Center, and Southmoreland will have 2 wrestlers on the mats at the state tournament.
