The top AAA wrestlers in the WPIAL showcased themselves well over the weekend in Canon McMillan, and no one was a better example of that then Spencer Lee of Franklin Regional. Lee became the 27th wrestler to win four WPIAL Championships, pinning Noah Levett of Kiski Area in 1:16 to win his fourth title.  In addition to the fall on Levett, Lee also pinned his other three opponents, all in the first period.

In addition to Lee, Cam Coy of Penn Trafford wrestled a great tournament to become the 73rd wrestler to win three WPIAL Championships. Coy also collected three first period falls to get to the finals, where he then beat Canon McMillan’s Gerrit Nijenhuis 5-2 to win the title.

In addition to Lee and Coy, there were four other wrestlers to repeat as WPIAL champions. Caleb Morris of Waynesburg, who won his first as a freshman, got his second WPIAL gold with a 2-0 win over Hunter Baxter of Pine Richland. At 170, Tim Wallace of Albert Gallatin won his second championship, defeating Kyle Homet of Waynesburg 5-0. Another wrestler to defend his title was Nino Bonaccorsi of Bethel Park. He was victorious over Matt McGillick of Penn Trafford in the finals, 10-3. The final repeat champion was at 195 pounds, where Jake Woodley of North Allegheny won in a big way over two time state medalist Eli Grape of Upper St. Clair, with a fall in 3:40.

A pair of wrestlers were unable to defend their WPIAL crowns. At 113 pounds, Louis Newell of Seneca Valley dropped a decision to North Hills freshman sensation Sam Hillegas for the second week in a row. After losing by fall a week prior, Newell dropped a 6-4 decision to Hillegas. The other wrestler to not repeat was Zach Hartman of Belle Vernon at 160 pounds. Hartman dropped a hard fought 7-4 decision to Eric Hong of North Allegheny.

Three teams walked away with five PIAA qualifiers. The list included Kiski Area (who won the team points title), North Alleghey (with two champions), and Belle Vernon. Three teams had four total medalists in the WPIAL Championships, including Canon McMillan, Penn Trafford, and Hempfield (who brought home three gold medals).

We will be joined by special guest Spencer Lee of Franklin Regional, fresh off winning his 4th WPIAL Championship.
