North Allegheny notebook: Boys wrestlers capture section title

North Allegheny’s boys wrestling team completed an undefeated section season Jan. 24 with a 66-9 win over Mars to secure the Section 2-3A championship.

The Tigers improved to 16-3 overall and finished 5-0 in Section 2.

Casey Walker (127 pounds), William Bentrim (133), Griffen Reid (139), Travis Stipetich (152), Kellen Buggey (172), Mason Hartung (189) and Brayden McCarthy (285) all had pins. Evan Schomburg (107), Charlie LaQuatra (114), Gus Stedeford (121) and Aidan Buggey (215) won by forfeit.

• The Tigers qualified for the WPIAL Class 3A team playoffs and were scheduled to open against Baldwin in the first round Jan. 31 at Bethel Park. The winner was to face the winner of North Hills and Bethel Park right after.

The WPIAL semifinals and championships are set for Feb. 3 at Peters Township’s AHN Arena.

• Nine North Allegheny boys wrestlers placed in the top six at the Allegheny County tournament on Jan. 20, lifting the Tigers to a fourth-place finish.

Schomburg, a freshman, finished in second place at 107 pounds.

After 17-2 and 5-0 wins in the early rounds, Schomburg beat Thomas Jefferson’s Zach Rehak, 3-1, in the semifinals and then fell to Quaker Valley’s Bruce Anderchak, 5-0, in the the finals.

Stedeford (121) and Aidan Buggey (215) took third place. Bentrim was fourth at 133. LaQuatra (114), Walker (127), Reid (139) and Kellen Buggey (172) took fifth. And Bradyn McConneha finished sixth at heavyweight.

Plum won the tournament title with 225.5 points, ahead of Thomas Jefferson (220.5), Bethel Park (211), North Allegheny (206.5) and Fox Chapel (183.5).

NA boys drop Seneca Valley

Joey Dopirak scored 19 points, Joe Marquis and Anthony Sciote added 14 points apiece and Ty Iwanokiw had 12 to push North Allegheny (6-10, 3-2) to a 62-53 win over Seneca Valley in Section 1-6A play Jan. 22.

Tyler Pepin scored 23 points and Owen Congdon had 18 for Seneca Valley (5-12, 1-4).

On Jan. 23, the Tigers fell to Shaler, 53-38, in a nonsection game.

Dopirak led North Allegheny with 18 points and Marquis had 10.

NA inline moves to 15-1

The North Allegheny inline hockey team beat Upper St. Clair 6-4 on Jan. 21 to improve to 15-1.

Logan Cerqua scored twice, and Aidan Anthony, Tristan Soose, Matthew Noffsinger and Mitchell Ludwick added goals in the win.

Girls basketball earns pair of wins out east

The North Allegheny girls basketball team scored a pair of victories in a trip out east.

The Tigers beat Cumberland Valley, 69-25, on Jan. 20, behind 13 points from Grace Heliger and 12 from Leah Skweres. Lydia Betz added 10 points.

The next day, the Tigers beat Central Dauphin, 32-23, to improve to 14-1 overall. Betz had 12 points to lead the scoring.

Girls wrestlers fall to Canon-McMillan

Audrey Morrison (142 pounds), Maya Scott (148) and Leyna Rumpler (155) had pins for North Allegheny, but the Tigers dropped a 60-18 decision to No. 1-ranked Canon-McMillan (12-1) in girls wrestling on Jan. 23.

The No. 2-ranked Tigers fell to 7-1 overall.
