High school roundup for March 21, 2024: Deer Lakes pitcher throws no-hitter

Maddie Kee threw a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 10, to lead Deer Lakes to a 13-0 victory over Highlands (0-1) in nonsection softball Thursday.

Kee also singled, doubled and drove in a run. Avery Rethage homered and drove in a pair, and Tia Germanich had a double, triple and three RBIs for the Lancers.

Avella 10, Fort Cherry 6 – Winning pitcher Avrey Rado had two singles, a double and two RBIs and Haleigh Rush collected three hits for Avella (2-1) in a nonsection win. Taylor Shirley had two hits and two RBIs and Sydney Strope doubled and drove in a pair for the Eagles. Mylee Johnson had two doubles and three RBIs and Madison Farner doubled and drove in two for Fort Cherry (0-1).

Connellsville 3, Greensburg Salem 1 – Winning pitcher Mackenzie Victor gave up one unearned run on three hits with eight strikeouts to lead Connellsville (2-0) to a nonsection win. Kirra Davis tripled for the Falcons. Gionnah Ruffner tripled and drove in a run for Greensburg Salem (1-1).

Elizabeth Forward 12, Spruce Creek 2 – Julia Resnik singled, homered and drove in two runs and Hannah Evans had two hits and four RBIs to help Elizabeth Forward (1-0) to a five-inning nonsection win. Winning pitcher Shelby Telegdy had a single, double and two RBIs and Aubri Cimba also had two hits.

Knoch 9, Hackettstown (NJ) 0 – Marlee Fraser threw a five-inning one-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead Knoch (1-1). Carissa Terkely had three hits and Fraser and Brynne Smith each had two hits and an RBI. Lizzie Danik singled, doubled and drove in a run and Samantha Robb had a triple and two RBIs.

Leechburg 20, Valley 16 – Winning pitcher Adalyn Zanotto doubled, homered and drove in four runs and Madison Wetzel had a single, triple and four RBIs to lead Leechburg (1-1) to a nonsection win. Grace Richards and Ava Feretti each had three hits with a double for the Blue Devils. Olivia Lowe singled, doubled twice and drove in three runs and Ashea Broadus had a single, a triple and four RBIs for Valley (0-2).

Madonna (WV) 11, Burgettstown 9 – Kendall Ryan went 3 for 3 as Madonna scored four runs in the top of the seventh to secure a nonsection win. Raya Sentipal singled, doubled and homered, Jaiden Gilbert had two singles, a double and two RBIs, and Emma McGregor and Brooklyn Robinson each had a single, double and two RBIs for Burgettstown (0-1).

McGuffey 3, South Allegheny 2 – Kaylee Ward hit a walk-off double to lift McGuffey (2-1) to a nonsection win. Katie Grimm had two doubles and an RBI and Maura Janovich singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Highlanders. Lily Dranko singled and tripled for South Allegheny (1-1).

Pine-Richland 11, North Hills 3 – Winning pitcher Izzy Suleski doubled twice, homered and drove in five runs to power Pine-Richland (1-2) to a nonsection win. Delaney Jamison homered and Mackenzie Gillis singled and doubled for the Rams. Abigail Sutton went 3 for 3 with two homers and a double for North Hills (2-1).

Quaker Valley 18, New Brighton 3 – Leah Weisser doubled, homered and drove in four runs to power Quaker Valley (2-0) to a nonsection win. Natalie DeGori and Gemma Weigand each doubled and drove in a run and Isabella Jarrett also doubled for the Quakers. Alexis Wall had two RBIs for New Brighton (0-2).

Rochester 17, Freedom 11 – Lydia Shaffer singled, doubled and drove in five runs for Rochester (1-0) in a nonsection win. Ashlyn Schidemantle had a single, triple and an RBI and Samantha Moore doubled and drove in a pair for the Rams. Annabelle Komlos had three hits and three RBIs for Freedom (0-1).

Souderton 3, Franklin Regional 0 – Winning pitcher McKenna Schroding threw a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead Souderton in Myrtle Beach. Toryn Fulton, Adrianna Martz, Iyarah Hicks and Olivia Cowell had hits for Franklin Regional. The Panthers (0-2-1) also played to an 8-8 tie with Hackettstown (NJ). Fulton had two hits and an RBI and Hicks and Chloe Lancaster each doubled.

Souderton 11, Laurel Highlands 4 – Ava Elliott went 3 for 3 to lead Souderton. Jayna Fabery had two hits and an RBI and Niaha Dillard doubled for Laurel Highlands (0-1).

Southmoreland 10, Penn-Trafford 0 – Amarah McCutcheon had a double, home run and four RBIs and Kaylee Doppleheuer also homered to lead Southmoreland (1-0) to a nonsection victory in five innings. Maddie Brown threw a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts. Mack Keenan had two hits for Penn-Trafford (0-1).

West Mifflin 11, Ringgold 1 – Aubrey Jasulski singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Rylie Dobnak had two hits and two RBIs for West Mifflin (1-1) in a nonsection win. Emma Nolff doubled for Ringgold (0-2).

Baseball

Beth-Center 11, Mapletown 1 – Jackson Nopwasky struck out 11 in four innings and Ethan Varesko and Chase Bebout doubled as Beth-Center (1-0) defeated Mapletown (1-1) in a nonsection matchup.

Brentwood 6, Clairton 4 – Aidan Barker had two hits, including the game-tying RBI single during a four-run seventh inning, to help Brentwood (1-0) to a nonsection win. Zach Wuenschell tripled and scored three runs for the Spartans. Tahvaz Armstrong went 2 for 2 with two runs scored for Clairton (1-1).

Central Catholic 11, Germantown Friends 1 – Max Clister went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Yaniel Heredia was 2 for 2 with three stolen bases and two runs scored as Central Catholic (1-0) won in Myrtle Beach. Carson Pettyjohn was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on two hits and striking out five in four innings.

Leechburg 12, Apollo-Ridge 2 – Jayden Floyd went 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI to lead Leechburg (1-0) to a nonsection win. Mason Bertino singled, doubled and drove in four runs and Rocco Vigna had a single, double and two RBIs. Gage Wingard went 3 for 4 with a double for Apollo-Ridge (0-1).

Quaker Valley 10, OLSH 4 – Ryan Finamore went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Nolan Wagoner went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs to help Quaker Valley (1-1) to a nonsection victory. Brady Brazell singled, doubled and drove in three runs for OLSH (1-3).

Shaler 6, Franklin Regional 0 – Colby Weber threw six scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking none and striking out eight, to lead Shaler (3-0) to a nonsection win. Landon Schiffhauer doubled twice and drove in three runs and Colby McGuire singled twice and doubled for the Titans. Blake Bertucci had two hits for Franklin Regional (0-1).

Shenango 9, Wilmington 7 – Sam Patton had two hits and Tyler Houk drove in three runs to power Shenango (1-1) to a nonsection win.

Thomas Jefferson 8, Peters Township 3 – Alec Warden and Tyler Lesko each had two hits and two RBIs and Elias Lipincott singled and doubled to lead Thomas Jefferson (5-0) to a nonsection victory. Carter Shanafelt went 3 for 3 for Peters Township (2-1).

Girls lacrosse

Quaker Valley 19, Seton LaSalle 4 – Lucy Roig scored eight goal, Mia Floro added three, and Alexa Westwood added two goals and four assists to lead Quaker Valley to a Section 2-2A win. Sydney Hewitt and Meredith Fallgren also scored twice for the Quakers.

Fox Chapel 16, Peters Township 10 – Sydney Schutzman scored nine goals and Caroline Grimsley added four to lead Fox Chapel (2-0) to a nonsection win. Meg Delaney, Zehra Ozkaya and Kennedy Murton also scored for the Foxes.

Boys volleyball

Canon-McMillan 3, Seton LaSalle 0 – Luke Bockius had seven kills and eight digs and Justin Peters added six kills and eight assists to lead Canon-McMillan (2-0) to a nonsection win. Nolan Rosing had 11 digs and Dino Trovato dished out eight assists.
